Hi,

I am minutes away from ordering my Nikon D80 (18-70mm) online and just want to check a couple of things..

Should I buy a bag for it at the same time (as this seems pretty important). If so, how do I know which one to get? I'm worried I'll get one that doesnt fit everything in properly (too big/small for the camera). Any suggestions?

Also, on the same note is there anything else that you would say would be vital to buy at the same time as the camera?

Thanks

Julia

Bags are a very personal choice. I'd wait until you get your stuff, then go to a camera shop and try several with your kit to see what takes your fancy.

Room for a bit of expansion is always good...

completely agree with andrew on that, i've got 3 lens's and a D50, got some cleaning gear, and a few other bits and the bag is pretty much full. cost me £50 aswell, gonna need to upgrade it soon.

Cool, good thinking!

Ok then, I guess it's time to click that button and buy this camera then!!

Dunno about any of you, but buying my first SLR and spending this amount of money is scary!!

In all my excitement I forgot to get some memory so that's something to think about. As for bags, I bought a small Kangaroo bag for £45 that I outgrew within a few weeks. Lately I bought a Lowepro Mini Trekker from Jessops for £49.99 reduced from £100. That holds everything I have ammassed since.

Snap to Dal's comments.

I've got a lovely pricey bag that already is too small. I'd say wait for as long as poss, as you might be amazed at how quickly you accumulate filters, flashes, cables, lenses and other bits ...

I've got three bags.

Lowepro Orion Trekker - got free with magazine subscription
Held 350D&Grip, 18-55, 70-300, flash. With room for personal items in the top half
Keep for reduced kit outings where I need to travel light.

Lowepro Mini Trekker AW - free with magazine subscription
Held Camera&grip, 24-105, 10-20, 50mm, 28-300, flash, lightmeter, lens brush, hi-vis waistcoat, box of cokin filters, and some other stuff. Main bag.

plus an older style of camera bag, shoulder strap. Keep my old film kit in it.

I did try a Slingshot, but it wasn't to my taste so sold it on...

Cool, thanks for the advice. I'll wait until I get the camera (should be tomorrow as I will get next day delivery). Then I'll look to get a bag and some memory. Might as well get the memory when I go to the shop as I'm not sure how much I should get to start off with. Money is probably going to be a factor with that!

you wont be able to take pics until you have memory, and high street shops are usually the most expensive... go to play.com or 7dayshop.com and order some now if you can. at least 1GB for the D80, 2 GB is better, more if you can afford it. Is the D80 on CF cards?

DON'T buy memory from a shop (generally speaking)

Jessops charged my dad £31.49 for a 2gb SD card before xmas, I buy a better spec'd card for £14.99 online. They charge too much, and most shops are the same in my experience :)

EDIT @ LL - No the D80 is SD card & SDHC card :)

Further to the above advice re bags here's my tuppence worth. Everyone is saying that you should make room for expansion but sometimes you don't want all your kit with you.

I have two bags for my digital kit, a Crumpler Bens Pizza XXL and a Lowe Pro Stealth 650AW. I actually want a couple more, one smaller than the Crumpler to just take a body and a walkabout zoom and a Slingshot 300 for when I want to walk around with a big zoom attached but don't want a bag the size of a double decker bus hanging off my shoulder.
So my ideal set up would be:
Small bag - Body and 28-105/18-200 type zoom attached
Ben's Pizza - Body and 50mm attached with 80-200/2.8 & 20mm/1.8
Slingshot - Body with 70-200/2.8 attached, 20,50,105mm primes, flash
Stealth 650 - 2 Bodies, very large prime, large telezoom, 3/4 wider primes, flash etc

So get your camera first and then think about how and where you'll be using it. You don't want too big a bag if it's cumbersome and gets in the way, so a small first bag might be just right for you.

i couldnt believe 7dayshop prices when i was lookin for memory cards!
i dont knoe how shops get away with pricing them so high

On a side note, if anyone buys from cameras2u.com be aware that the discount codes given on www.camerapricebuster.co.uk do not apply to DSLRs. The website appears to add the discount but it doesn't come off your order. I called the helpline who said 'sorry, the site doesn't explain this, but we are working on that'.

Just a head's up.

Thanks for that Cutsie, but at least you should qualify for Nikon's £50 cashback as you've bought the lens kit before 07.01.08
