Hello

I have just joined this site. I am thinking of upgrading my camera from Canon350d. But i cant decide between the Canon 7D and 5D. I will be using the camera to take portrait photography, landscape and dancing photography (latin and ballroom). I am hesistant in buying the 5D ,as i am on relatively tight budget because i need too buy a lens aswell. Although the 5D no doubt will give my superb portrait shots - will it be fast enough to cope with the dancing ? Any thoughts/opinions/suggestions welcome
Steve

Hi Steve and welcome to TP.

What specifically do you want/need your new camera to do, that the 350D doesn't do? If you can answer that, the upgrade decision might seem a bit more clear.

I just feel like the 350d is bit out-dated. I am after a fast camera with a higher resolution that gives better picture quality than 350d. The 350d is more of entry level dslr and i want move up to the next level of camera. Ideally i would like to start doing some paid work as a sideline. I also have elinchrom D-lite 4 kit, with lastolite hi-lite background

I upgraded from a 350D to a 30D, much better camera, if you are getting into Portraits in a big way Full Frame may be the way to go, but I would suggest that you collect better glass first, you would be surprised the difference a better lens can make.

Just my two pence worth.

Dave.

Have you considered a 5d classic as opposed to the MK2? Never owned one but it always gets great reviews, and would give you more room to splash out on lenses?

Not sure re the AF speed though for the dancing....

OK, but that doesn't help us help you.

Now we're getting somewhere...

Does "fast" mean good AF or good high-ISO performance?

How much resolution do you need? The 350D is 8MP and you can print any size you like from that. It's certainly adequate for prints up to A3 at least. The 5D Mk I is 12MP, 7D is 18MP and the 5D Mk II is 21MP ... how many do you need? Will your end product be for th web, for stock images, for magazines, for prints (and if so what size), .....?

Also, what lenses are you thinking of using? There's not much point buying a high-MP camera and then using a lens that can't deliver enough resolution to the sensor...

hi
many thanks for all the comments. I apologise if it may appear as though i am bit vague with what i am after. (mayby i should put this on the beginner forum:lol: ).

I reckon i am after above 12MP. I think if i go for something that is 18MP + that will be the difference in possibly earning some money from portraiture than if have had a lesser resolution camera if that makes sense ?

My end product is likely to be canvas (for portraiture).

The lens i am thinking of is the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM lens ? (by the way i have not won the lottery - i am just have an ambition to get better at photography and to start earning money from it)

To be honest i am not sure what i mean by "fast". I dont want a camera that has shutter lag/noise when i am taking pictures. For action shots like the dancing , i want a camera that can take pictures in low light (the lens i mentioned will help with that) and to be able to cope with the fast movement of the dancing ?

I hope thats answered all the questions you posted ?

Thanks again for spending the time to post

Steve

When you have mentioned you want a camera that takes photos fast and can cope in low light, ideally you need a lens opposed to a camera :P

The camera is limited by the lenses you put on it, I used to do some ballroom photos on my 400D with the 18-55 and realised it was pants, then I upgraded to the 24-70mm F2.8 on the 400D and the difference was amazing.

With the 400D (10MP) I have printed on A0 posters and 32x24" Canvas without too much pixelation.

So definately upgrade your lens before you upgrade the camera

That phrase "i am just have an ambition to get better at photography and to start earning money from it" worries me.

Before you start earning money at photography you MUST have everything else in place.

You must have a camera which will give you the quality you need and you MUST be totally at ease using the camera, which means practice, practice, practice.

Personally from your needs I would recommend the 5DII for the high ISO quality.

But with that camera you do need quality glass.

Just having an excellent camera does not make you a Pro photographer.

I would recommend that you start very slowly, maybe with kids etc.

If you have friends with kids offer to photograph them for free - then, when you can produce excellent results you can SLOWLY move on.

The lens you mention will produce good results and the "Nifty Fifty" actually produces excellent results at the cheapest price.

And with a fixed prime you won't lose pics fiddling with the zoom.

Hi & Welcome

Don't dismiss the 40/50D bodies, they are a crop sensor, but give very good results and are an upgrade from the 350D,
