Edit My Images
No
i have saved a lot of pics over the last couple of years onto an external hard drive as a back up , when i open them up now to edit they sa this is a read only file ???
can someone guide me how to convert to a jpeg so i can edit them some of these are my daughters wedding :'(

cheers grahame

Well they'll still be jpegs if that's what you saved them as Grahame. Usually files are made 'read only' to protect them from being edited or deleted. Have you tried right clicking on the files and unticking 'read only' under the file properties?

when i right click and look at properties the read only and attributes box are unticked ??
anything else i can try ??

You need a techy type then - it sounds like it might be something to do with Admin access or permissions.. Can you remember if the drive is password protected, you may need to logon as an admin? I doubt it's anything major tbh.

thanks for trying jack.
im going to nightschool to learn photoshop elements so i will ask the tutor to see if he knows how to sort it

cheers grahame

We've got loads of techy types here who who will no doubt see this and be able to help you. I do remember having a similar problem myself and I'm sure it was something to do with permissions but I can't remember now. Drove me daft for a few days!

What format are they in on the external drive? JPEG or a raw format? What processing software do you use?

some are jpeg some are raw , i phoned a man inthe know and he suggests its because the pics are on an external hardrive i need to load them back onto my pc to edit them ? if this makes sense . my pc runs vista and my editing programs are windows live photo gallery also elements 7

Copy them back onto the main PC HDD and edit from there (probably with Elements). It's difficult as without knowing how they were edited in the first place it's difficult to know what to suggest. For example, I have lots of RAW files edited in Lightroom. Importing those files into another editing package may or may not include the edits I've made.... That depends on the package I'd be importing to...

hi andy
will try as you suggest tomorrow night

can you copy them to your internal hd, this may enable you to chage the staus of the images so you can edit them, or if you open them in PS then save as onto your internal HD

Cheers Steve

I get the same problem when using a cheap usb stick. I'll check back to see if you find a solution...

hi guys
looks like when i put pic back onto my pc i can edit them
thanks for the replys

cheers grahame

try to remove usb devices properly , 99% of the time you get away with it , other times the files get locked by the previous connection.

Cheers Steve
That's a very good point. I use a Sandisk USB stick and I'm constantly forgetting to eject the disk with the software before removing the stick.
