Hi everyone,

I'm not too sure if i'm posting this in the right place but here goes:

I am starting to produce greeting cards that will be distributed to shops within small villages and such.

These will include an image of prime locations or buildings within those areas.

I was wondering if there is anything I have to do before selling these cards for example: must i ask for permission before taking a photo of a church for this commercial purpose.

Basically i need to know if i can just point and click, then sell without infringing any laws.

Thanks :D

You can "point and click" without b reaking any laws, it's the selling that would require a property release...

If you're doing anything commercial with your photography it's always best practice to get permission of the subject (person or otherwise) on paper first. It will potentially save you a whole heap of trouble in the future.

ahhh, i knew about model releases but not property releases. Ill try my best to stick to landscapes, as for buildings ill sort out some release forms.

Thanks for your input :D

I don't see newspapers asking for permision to print photographs of anything so I doubt anyone needs it when photographing from public property. If you took a photo of say a church from the church grounds, that might be different.

not sure if a property release would apply, if your taking shots of the buildings from public land.
any opinions on that.

Most buildings do not need a property release when photographed from public land, however you need to be aware of any changes to the building - classic case is the Eiffel Tower, you can photograph that by day, however take a photo of it at night and sell it and you could be in trouble - the lights have been copyrighted.

Newspapers are informational so law regarding photos is different from selling for commercial profit.

so basically it would be a precaution to get property release forms signed just in case. That way i'll find out if there are any copyright issues surrounding the place ill be clicking at
