I recently got a canon 400d. I currently only have the kit 18-55 lens & im looking to purchase a new lens.

Im currently studying architecture & want a lens to take close-up photos of my models, i was therefore thinking a macro lens such as:

however, being new to this, i was hoping some of you could give me some advice :)

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome Tom :)

That lens won't do anything more than your kit lens. How big are your models and what kind of details do you need to shoot?

Reading between the lines I think you'd be better off using what you've got and a close-up lens on the front of your kit zoom for the detail shots. Something like this Hoya +2 diopter http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-hoya-58mm-close-up-2/p12004

You will likely have problems getting enough depth of field without long shutter speeds so think about a tripod, or careful use of flash - I think you'll need to bounce it, direct flash will probably look naff.

An ultra-wide lens would come in handy if you're into architecture...

Thanks for the quick reply :)

some of the spaces in my model that i need to photograph can be quite small & im needing to take photo's of internal perspectives as well as external shots. I'll try find you an example.

I already have a tripod & will definitely be using that :)

No, your kit lens already goes wider than either of those! If you want a wide-angle you're probably looking at a used Sigma 10-20 for your budget.

Need to see an example of what you want to do really.

im struggling to find a good example of what i want it for, however ive been looking at examples of photos taken with the sigma 10-20 & i think it could be very useful, however im struggling to find it for my budget, both on here & ebay it seems to be around 300 :(
