Help....Re-size question

I am having difficulties resizing pixels down or inches to 1MB or less for a website. They are suggesting 800 on the long side.
Now I am not daft but I am not understanding this and any help would be a fantastic help to me.

What software are you using? It should be easy to get an 800 pixel image down to under a meg. Check the compression/quality options when you are saving the smaller file.

If you have photoshop, open image in photoshop and click Image/image size and enter 800 in the box for pixel dimentions.

If you have no software, download Faststone Image Viewer from HERE.

Open up the image in Faststone and click Resize/resample from the left hand menu and enter 800 in the Pixel size box.

A small tip, only fill in the 800 px in the longest side box and this will retain the aspect ratio.

Forget about inches when you're saving for web. Just use pixels.
