Help: Put an exposed roll of 120 film through the washer...

Hello,

Unfortunately I put an exposed roll of 120 format Portra 400 through the wash (left it in a shorts pocket)

Any advice? :shrug: It was a 40 degree wash, should I just get it developed anyway?
 
Personally, although this has never happened to me, I think you might be very lucky if this is in any way still usable... Has the film stayed rolled up? My guess would be that if the water + chemicals in the soap has reached all the film surface area, it'll be shafted. :(
 
Thanks for the reply Jonathan, yes the film is still tightly wound up and seems fine... I reckon I'll send it off and see what happens.

This is maybe a case of you won't know unless you try. I wouldn't have thought the 40 degree heat on it's own would do any damage (film is best stored in cold conditions but that doesn't necessarily mean a bit of heat will ruin it) but I guess it's whether water has made it's way in there and somehow messed things up. Personally I'd get it developed.

Who knows. You may find you start a whole new lomo trend ;)
 
If it was in one of the small containers that might have survived.
I once found a woman's handbag which had been stolen then discarded over a hedge almost a year previously - it was wet through but there was a film (in a container) and address found inside.
She asked if I could send the film to her and later said it developed OK
 
Well somewhere this week I saw shots processed in a variety of weird chemicals including absinthe (the result looking suitably insane!), so perhaps this really IS the next wave...

Yes. Don't wear shorts!

I have put a roll of film through the washing machine and processed it with no apparent affect.

You might as well try it as there's nothing to lose.

On a completely random note, I've just looked at the website for UKFilmLab and their link to Kate Murphy's site following her example shots from South Africa and have to say that they're some of the most impressive shots I've seen from a TLR;

Obviously great light helps but her photographs are stunning and I can see why her base price for wedding photography (on film it appears) is $4.5k!

Steve, they are some fantastic images. UKfilmlab is run by a friend of mine who has ties to FINDlab in the US, the results they come out with are incredible.

Oh wow, I'd never heard of UK Film Lab before; I'd be very interested in giving them a go.

I've been hoping for some time that something like FINDlab would make its way to the UK, so perhaps this is what I've been looking for.
 
I'm about to order some Kodak Portra 400 so i'll give the UKFilmLab a test. Thanks

Just checked out their site and it looks quite promising although 3 weeks is far too long for me to wait and as far as I can see there doesn't appear to be a 'dev only' option, which is a shame.

It's their scanning and editing that I'm most interested in. I love using my film cameras, don't mind scanning, but I hate the colour correction process required with colour negative film, I feel like I can never get it right.

If I can get them to scan and colour correct it for me, so I don't have to spend much time in front of the computer, I'm very much down with that.

I don't think I'd use them for dev only though, as the attraction is the high-quality scans and, as raglan surf has mentioned, it'd take too long.

No matter what, I'd plan to continue to develop and scan my own black and white, as I like doing the development and there's no colour correction for B & W negatives, so it goes much faster for me, but feel its worth a shot with UK Film Lab for colour.

That's some good feedback, I might give them a whirl wheni stop messing with slide in 120 format!

Hey everyone. I'm new here but I was alerted to this thread so thought I would join...I'm a photographer and I run UK Film Lab. Just to let you all know, our turnaround for C41 is 10 working days. True B&W is a few days longer. We should be able to push/pull C41 from next week or the week after, all being well!

Anyway, just thought I'd say hi :-)

Hi Christian, good to see you here. I'm the guy who emailed you yesterday about scan resolutions. I'm looking forward to seeing some of Joe's results, and RJ's. Tricky to discuss your service without falling foul of the TP advertising rules, but we've benefited from a couple of others in the past. And of course, as a film photographer, well... you're among friends here!

These are all really good, especially the first. It is good you got it developed
 
I think that would look good as a wet print.....
