HELP! Prom night!

A friend has asked me to take some photos of their daughter in her Prom dress tonight (6pm).
I am happy to do this as they are close friends but I need help on suggested poses for a 16yr old girl in stunning full length gown. I'm going to take photos of her on "the green" there are some shades tree areas or grassy areas...just for a nice simple backdrop as they don't have any space in their garden for a good background.

get far back use use the long end of your kit zoom, focus on the eyes, keep the shutter above 1/125

as for location what k#colour is her dress and her hair?
 
i have the same in a couple of hours for my son so will have a look through those links

Thank you everyone she has a plummy purplely dress and black hair
the place is like a green but canopied with the trees so no harsh lighting...
will use my 80-200 lens then ....
do i stick to natural light or do i need flash?

Unless you are able to stand quite a long way back I think you may find 80-200 is a bit long if you want to get in the whole dress. Photographing my daughter and her friends in a suburban garden a couple of nights ago, I found that I was down in the 28-70 range quite a lot.

And do watch the backgrounds, otherwise your pictures will be as disappointing as mine :'( (fortunately there was a professional photographer at the prom itself, so all was not lost).

Not at all - mine were taken will a 70-200 so an 80-200 will be fine, just have to use your legs !
 
I will take some with the 200 and switch to my kit lens... I've got a nifty fifty too for some head shots so I'll do a bit of everything to cover it I think! She said she's nervous at prom... I didn't tell her I was pooping myself about getting this right!

I want a really special shot that I can put on canvas for her mum as a thank you for something she has done for me.... fingers x'd. I'll try and post later tonight as I'm out straight after.

If your lighting is right Black makes the perfect background.

It is all about getting the lighting correct

because I am working on the assumption that they are outside with no lights, where the black will fall into the bg and be lost, in a studio or portable studio any look is viable, as is something lit on location

I'm reasonably happy with the outcome. Missed a few tricks but hey...its a learning curve right.

Hey, just wanted to say the photos are fab!! what a beautiful dress and equally beautiful girl, i think youve done really well, id be proud of these!! would love to see a few more with the full length of dress visable :)

really nice set ;)

#1 is great, perhaps a slight crop from the top right and a little darken

#2 could use a bit of a lift as its a tad dark on my panel
 
Slight colour cast on no2 also..

If you look in photoshop " or similer" you will see !!

would you like to see a very quick edit..?

Here is the edit. Very quick just checked levels and add 24% red on the colour balance Its not perfect but should show you the way to go imho....

You did great! I'm doing one next friday. What lighting did you use in the end? I can see number 2 was natural. Diid you use any flash for number one? It's a pity the exif isn't intact.
A really nice set. :thumbs:

Thank you. I didn't use flash at all. Just stuck to natural light. Got it too dark at times as forgot to check and got a bit carried away... but that it now in my mind... plus I realised before we left and made her go back for another and her pose turned out better too so I was happy.

Just about to update my flickr with some edits from the advice given and some more from the shoot.

Are you getting exif from my flickr or here? I'm not sure how you read it from looking here (not done it)... so don't know whats not intact. :shrug::thinking:
 
I think you did very well indeed - purple is a vicious colour to deal with on fabric (or anything) and they are nice shots that she will no doubt cherish.

Just as an aside - does the girl in question know that you have posted pictures of her on flikr (and on here) ?

These are lovely shots I am sure her mum will be happy with them, I have promised my niece I will do some shots for her and her friends in a few weeks when they have their Prom, I hope mine are as lovely as these.

She enjoyed it and now she's seen the results we're thinking about getting her all done up again and finding a great location for some more photos!

That's the plan for my niece and friends, not necessarily trying to get them on the actual PROM night but giving them a chance to do it all again on a sunny day in the local park when it's not a massive issue of they get the dress muddy!
