Hi! While I was away touring Scandinavia my SD disk in my Canon 100D came up with a corrupt disk warning. I used another for the rest of my trip but can anyone advise if I have permanently lost my shots as wont download on laptop until formatted which I am not sure if it will wipe them permanently? Or where can you take them the disk and get it rectified if at all please?

There are programs that'll rescue any saveable shots on a corrupted card. I haven't used one for years but back then I just searched for free recovery programs to download and I found one that recovered lots of files from a corrupted card.

So, if I were you I'd Google something like "free sd card recovery programs" and see where that took me.

google Zero assumption, The Image Recovery is free, I done a card last night that I had formated god know how many time and it still came up with picture from 2 years ago as a test

Its dead easy, plug the card in to pc/ card reader and then run programme, let it do its thing then it will ask if you would like to save a copy of the reclaimed photos , create a new folder on your desktop before hand and save to that, just don't try formatting the card.

Edit
it will also find photo that you had taken long before your trip

Does it take a long time? I left it for an hour then stopped it!
Yes it takes a long time (depending on your PC speed and the size of the card).

On large cards and old pc's I'd not be surprised at several hours.

Ouch ... What a pain. Hope you get some of them back.

What's that law called that dictates that these things always happen when you're on a trip-of-a-lifetime and never when snapping your dog in your own back garden ....?

I just tried Zero Assumption. I formatted a card in my camera, and tried to recover. It found all the images, but as TIFF files, not raw files. Better than nothing though.

Thanks for all the advice, may try it again when on a day off rather than after 12 hour shift! Old slow laptop and hundreds of photos may take some time! :0

Set it going before going to work. :)

Ha! I cheated and went off to the tech guy and he put it in a reader, fiddled about with the card, put it through some programme and said, "nope, doesn't work, nowt you can do sorry love. Bin it is all you can do." I was gutted!!!

I got back and thought I had nothing to lose so persevered with ZAR free recovery and now I have 100 of the 503 photos I had lost and still downloading 50 at a time. Proud of myself for finally learning something technical (although is pretty simple) and over the moon I now have the Denmark folder alongside Norway and Sweden. Basically I want to say a huge thanks to all of you who commented and gave support and advice! My holiday now feels fulfilled!!! THANK YOU x

I'd be sure to let the "expert" know the final outcome.

The other thing to do once you've got the images back us cut yhe card in half so you don't accidentally reuse the card.

Glad you got it sorted :D

Just out of interest I downloaded ZAR and tried it and it works... but it only found JPEG's. Is there anything which can recover deleted raw files?

diskdigger will, I've recovered files from PCs that have had the disk formatted and windows reinstalled using it
diskdigger.org

Thanks. I'll give it a go.

I don't have any need for a recovery program at the moment :D but you never know so it's worth knowing what works :D

you need to have a backup if your backups fail :p

I have to say that I've been lucky with memory cards and I've never (fingers crosses... touch wood...) ever had a problem. The only time I've ever had so much as a hiccup it was a spooky one :D I was taking some shots of the stones at Avebury and I snapped a spiritual looking hippy type :D but when I reviewed my shots it wasn't there... spooky! But when I downloaded the card to my pc there it was :D

It only found TIFFs for me... which is odd.. as the card contained raw files. I can understand finding the JPEG previews embedded in the raws.... but TIFF files? The camera wasn't even shooting in TIFF. Who shoots in TIFF?

Its most probably the program, it covert them to tiff when repairing them as it does not have raw capability's

File Format Issues

Camera RAW Files
Some RAW file types that are corrupted or with very little fragmentation may be recognized as a TIFF file and not have the normal RAW file type name. This can happen if the EXIF data is corrupted or the end of file identifier is missing on some camera RAW files types. These files can sometimes be renamed to the correct extension and opened with the default application. In some cases, an alternate photo editor may be needed to open and convert/resave the TIFF to a particular file name.
