Hi fellow TP users,
I recently had an idea, which i would like some advice and information on if possible, i'm sure someone will know what i'm talking about :D

Ok so i have a Nikon D5100 and love it, and the kit lens 18-55mm, ive had it for about a year now, but i want more range! i'm into wildlife and wildlife photography alot.
But i simply can't afford a new lens, BUT... i do have some old lenses from my Zenit and Praktica 35mm film camera's....

the lenses are:

I think they are M42 mounts?
Helios 44-2
Helios 44M 2/58
Helios 44M-4
Petri cc auto 1:2.8/35
Prinzflex Auto MC 28mm 1:2.8
Mirage mk2 Auto 1:28 135mm
Access SQ 1:5.6 300mm
Yashinon (sigma) Auto zoom 1:4.5 75-230mm

And i also have:
Carl Zeiss Jena 2.8 28mm mc &
Prakticar 1.8 50mm Pentacon

I would just like to know if i can fit these lenses on my Nikon d5100 body, and if so, how and what mounts/adapters/converters... i have not got a clue, but i think it is possible.
If someone could guide me in the right direction i would be so happy, please even if you dont know about this just guide me :D

just out of curiosity what is the value of the above lenses? i would really like to know if possible too, sorry for all the questions.

Many Thanks,
Richie Hingley.

They will fit via the apropiate mount converter, but you wont have autofocus (obviously) or more importantly metering, so youll be shooting completely manually. You also wont have manual focus confirmation, which means focusing will be very hard due to the tiny viewfinder.

This may or may not be a problem for you, depending on your experience and skill, but worth noting.

As for the value.. No idea!

Thanks for the speedy reply TCR,
yeah i thought about that, and the price of a mount or adapter is surely cheaper than a new zoom lens, so i really would like to try it out even if the final quality is lacking,
Thanks for the advice,

Richie.

Any other information on the above topic or any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You also won't have infinity focus, unless you buy an adaptor with a correcting lens.
The good thing is that you'll only be using the centre of the lenses.

Thanks for the info Kendo,

Yeah ive heard of that :(

i've been offered a straight swap for the lenses, for a sigma or nikon 100-300mm, or a 75-300mm

What would everyone else do? i really aint sure at all, please help!

Richie.

Check sold listings on ebay to get an idea, eg: http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_f..._Sold=1&_nkw=Carl+Zeiss+Jena+2.8+28mm&_sop=15

Not sure about the value of the other lenses but my Helios 44 was under a tenner from West Yorkshire Cameras.

Manual focus for wildlife on a D5100 would not be much fun (no peaking or magnified view in viewfinder)

You can get a used Nikon 55-300 for around £160 if selling your manual lenses would raise that. http://www.mpbphotographic.co.uk/us...nses/nikon-af-s-55-300mm-f/4.5-5.6-g-vr-dx-4/ Or a third party AF telephoto lens like a Tamron or Sigma 70-300 for as little as £50 or £60 used - maybe not the best lenses in the world but at least they have AF and perfectly usable image quality especially if stopped down to f8 or so.

ooo Thanks for the info Applemint,

sounds good about used lenses, its just selling my manual lenses lol aint sure who would want them, but if anyone is interested give me a shout, someone is currently in the process of willing to swap all my above lenses, for a sigma 75-300mm or a nikon 100-300mm straight swap, are those lenses good? i wish i had someone i could talk to about all this, i feel lost >..<

Any advice would be perfect, Many Thanks
Richie.
