Help please

Hi there, I'm struggling with lighting at the minute & doing my best to learn more & correct my mistakes!

I really need some help, i've been looking online for help but not a lot!

My backgrounds have a grey tinge instead if white & I know I can correct using my cs5 and adjustment layer & levels but sometimes it effects my subject too, someone mentioned masking my subject but I don't know how?? Can anyone help me?

Try dodging the background with about a 10% brush on highlights. With a nice soft brush you can pain around your subject, brightening the background a bit at a time.
