help please with canvas colour in CS4

I'm hoping that someone will be able to help before I drive myself nuts.

I have an image sized to 16" x 12" on a canvas sized to 20" x 16". I will be sending this off to DS Colour labs for printing but I need the canvas to be white so I can put it directly in a frame without a the need for a mount.

I have been trying without success to get the canvas colour to change from grey to white even though I have selected white in the canvas extension box of the canvas size dialog box.

What am I doing wrong?

Instead of extending the current canvas, I'd make a new one of the size you want, 20x16, white background, then open your 16x12 image and select all/copy, open the new canvas and paste. Move around to suit then flatten.

Why cant you simply click - image - canvas size

Enter new size 4 inches x 4 inches ...relative ticked and change canvas extension colour to white.

depending what you've done already you may need to flatten the layer(s) first
