Hi guys
Went to buy the
Canon mark 3 today and after being in the shop over an hour I left with nothing but confusion.
I like landscape but also wildlife.
So looked at the 7d mark 2 and 6 d then started about lenses etc etc
Totally confused now. Advice would be truly appreciated.
 
5 and 6d are both full frame. The 7d is a crop. For wildlife the crop will get you in closer, for landscape the full frame will get you wider.

I have both crop and full and tend to prefer the full frame 5d mk3.

What is your full budget including lenses? That would help too.
 
Leaving the shop confused is so much better than leaving with the wrong Camera for your needs.

What are you shooting with currently ?
What was you reason for choosing the Mk 3 ?
Was there any particular reason for the confusion other than information overload ?

My budget would be t the 3k mark

Yes I guess it's better than buying the wrong thing, yes I guess an overload of information is what confused me.
The reason for the mk3 was its so highly recommended and seem popular.
I'm currently using 40d with a few sigma lenses and canon 70 200 l series
 
He has a few lenses. But a nice lens to go on the 1dx would work a treat.
 
Ah! So you already own Canon equipment.

You could swap for an alternative if you can't find something from the Canon stable to satisfy you, but it does cost to change.
 
5d mk3 from someone like panamoz, 24-105 and an extender for your 70-200. That should get you started nicely


In fact looking at their web site they are doing a 5d mk3 with 24-70 F4 IS for under £2k, so you have cash left over for a 300mm F4.

Yes I have seen that one.
At the moment jessops have £300 off the 5d m3 kit with 24 -105 lens and throwing in memory card as well.
But that new 7d gets a good write up too. But just fancy the jump to full frame. But they were saying in shop that the GPs might not be good enough for wildlife???
 
I would say it depends what you want the camera for in the main. If its wildlife you will always be on the look out for longer reach. The crop sensor will help you there. If you will be shooting a bit of everything then personally I prefer full frame.

Of course you could always buy both on your budget with an L kit lens included. That would be extravagant obviously, but you only live once.

I don't have a 7d mk2, but have had a mk1 and currently have a 70d. I still find myself migrating to the 5d when I shoot at safari parks as with two well chosen lenses I can cover everything I need to, from a tiger the other side of an enclosure to a wide view with the kids playing.

That said at some point I will move the 70d to try a 7d mk2. The 5d is going nowhere though.

To be honest I must be a nightmare as I like all photography, but it's animals and landscape, so I guess it's one end of the spectrum to the other

I've been looking at a few reviews and a lot use the 5dmk3 for wildlife still.
I guess I could still always have my 40d with me as it's still a decent body and sensor and I think slightly faster shutter speed
 
Is there a bias towards animals or landscape? Or straight 50/50? If you lean slightly more one way then that's the way I'd go camera wise. Crop would still be fantastic for landscape with the right lens.

I think I'm leaning more towards landscape if I'm honest.

Joking aside, I have used the 5d3 primarily for wildlife for the last 12 months and love it. I find the frame rate enough for what I need. The AF is fantastic and accurate. Yes there are times when having that little bit longer would help, however with the right lenses this isn't an issue. The only thing I would say about switching to FF for wildlife is that the lenses to get the same MP on subject will cost more, however it isn't all about the MP. I love my 5d3

Well after your message I thought the same and phoned jessops to put it to one side and will pick it up in the morning. Only to be told offer gone now and it's gone back up £300
So will take a bit of time now and possibly the rumours will be right and the new 5d mark4 will be out in March and will buy that one.

I think some of the best wildlife shots are taken with wide angles so your right nothing wrong with an fullrame for that purpose! Of course if people think the world is lacking in bird on twig shots then apsc and a long lens is a must ;)

See what offers appear Monday :p

As to the 5d4, if it does appear in March (which is still yet to be seen) I should imagine it will be about £1000 more, I also wonder other than adding 4k video (which doesn't bother me) and maybe more MP, how much of an improvement it will be.

If they could do a 300 discount yesterday they can still do it today ring them up and make it clear they have a sale if they honour the desk as it was when you discussed it. I would be surprised and disappointed if they didn't agree!

The mk4 may well be released but it will be a budget buster on release and won't fall to current mk3 prices for a long time. It might push down mk3 prices though.
 
A couple of other, possibly not helpful, thoughts.

I do not own a full frame (ie with 35mm sized sensor) DSLR so the following is from what I have read on the Web.

1. To get the best out of FF cameras you need the best lenses, which will need to be factored into the budget.

2. Unless you are intending print BIG (what BIG is appears to be debatable, but I think I have seen bigger than A3 mentioned) then you are unlikely to see any difference between prints from a full frame and a crop sensor.

Not strictly true, the £300 was subsidised by Canon. However they should move a bit.
 
Yes this was being subsidised by cannon. My disappointment lies with the sales changing my mind and putting doubt in my mind after I've wanted to own one of these for over a year. And 6 months ago I bought one but was scammed and lost £1700 but that's another story

Just a thought but have you thought about 2nd hand. Quite a few wildlife photographers have been switching to the 7d2 for the extra reach. you should get a low shutter body for circa £1300-1400

Then you've had bad advice from the camera shop!

The 7d doesn't "get you in closer" - it just produces a smaller image from the smaller sensor, effectively cropping it. If you cropped the full frame image to match, you'd not lose anything, in fact, you'd likely find the FF images sharper, with more dynamic range.

Dont be fooled into the cropped cameras giving more reach, a 300mm lens is a 300mm lens whatever its attached to.

The 7d2 might be better on the AF front, but the 5d3 is no slouch in that department!

Ok, both of these statements are wrong. I own both full frame and cropped bodies (Canon) and even at screen size, you can see the IQ, dynamic range colour reproduction and vibrancy (particularly blues and reds) and sharpness, lens for lens, is much better with a FF body, especially for landscapes, where the crop loses most shadow detail, the FF camera stuns me with what you can bring out from the shadows. Thats the advantage of having such a wide dynamic range. Of course, noise levels on FF are far lower, the end result of which are far cleaner images which are far more malleable to process.

Lenses on FF bodies actually have to work less hard than on a cropped body - its actually high MP cropped bodies you should be using the better lenses on (though, you should use good lenses no matter what you're shooting with!), so statement number 1 should actually read the reverse.
