Hi Guys and girls, I currently have a Sony Viao that I bought around 2 or so years ago. It is running Vista home and it seems to be running really slowly and seems to crash alot? I only really using for sufing the web, editing photos , itunes (updating iPhone etc) and a bit of music mixing software (basic programs like Traktor). Any ideas on what I can do to help speed this machine up a bit?

Thank in advance.

First of all try formatting and reinstalling Windows. This might make a big difference.

The next thing would be to make sure you have maxed out the memory. Check Crucial.co.uk to see how much memory it can take. You could also think about replacing the hard drive with a 7200rpm model to speed it up a little.

Dave when you say crash, is it just turning itself off for no apparent reason?

I do have a fresh copy of vista and also XP availble so may give that a go. What is the best way to completely clear a laptop HD as I have done it before on my old desk top by taking the HD out and Formatting it using another computer?

rough idea of what the blue screen says can give us a clue as to whats wrong..

No sorry I cant remember , I kind of worked out what was doing it though it was when I was trying to add photos from my computer onto my iphone, as soon as it got to that part of the sync it froze and the screen went blue?

My old VAIO used to do this and it was caused by overheating, check that you can here the fan going, also give it a blow out just in case its full of dust and other nasties. My machine was the same age as yours as well.

make sure you have a full backup of all your itunes or you could spend alot of time/money getting it all back... once that is done it might be worth re-installing the same operating system, if its the recovery disk included with the sony laptop remove all of there unwanted crap...

I didnt get a recovery disc with the laptop so I assume that there must be something stored on it that will allow me to do a re install?
( Sorry for all these daft questions but Laptops really are not my thing?)
Is it normal for a reasonable laptop like this go have such reduced speed after only a couple of years of relativly light use?

Whenever anyone asks for my help regarding a slow computer and crashing the first thing I do is disable all startup items in Msconfig. It's surprising how many problems that alone solves. Apart from antivirus if one has it, there is no need to have ANYTHING else running at system startup. Apart from a volume control and occasionally a few other things, my system trays are empty.

Hmm this sound like a very good idea - now you have mentioned it I do get a few messages pop up on start up: 1 from AVAST (my old anti virus software) 1 from APPLE SYNC NOTIFIER (saying something could not be found) and maybe one more I cant remember. So might be worth giving that a go before anything else.

id hold fire on the reinstall, sounds more like a hardware and/or driver issue..

if you can get us the error later itd be handy..

I will try an iphone update / sync later this evening and let you now the outcome.

Thanks for the advice so far guys :)

I have the same symptoms on my Vaio of around the same age, have rebuilt it and it has sped up considerably althouygh it does get very hot!

With the Vaios you don't need a CD for the o/S, it is on it's own partition, I can't remember which F-key you push on startup but all the features to do a clean install are already on there, it does it pretty quickly as well with all the SONY drivers which is pretty handy :D
