Hi all

What I'm trying to do is is take a studio shot of a row of people (say about 8 people) and then create a police line up 'layer' to go behind the people shot, so it really does look like a police line up.

Does anyone know the best was to create a line up layer in photoshop please, bearing in mind I'm not very good at photoshop :bonk: (so would need clear instructions please!!)

And also, how could I apply the layers together in photoshop? Would it be a case of cutting around each person? I think the line up 'background' would have to be transparent would it??

Thanks for any help.

hi
im from a graphics background and there are lots of tutorials on line that can help.. one that i use quite a lot is blog.spoongraphics.co.uk
granted this is not really based on strictly photography but the principles would be the same i think. he has lots of free tutorials on there about cropping, cutting out adding background layers etc.
hope it helps

Thanks for that. When I say "I'm not very good at photoshop"...that means next to useless!!

I wouldn't even know where to start on that blog. I can't see a search facility and the problem is, not knowing what to search for...I'm not great with the right terminology. How do I even create the 'line-up' background before I even think about cropping / cutting / layering etc etc etc!

Thanks

hi again.. go to the home page of the blog and click the tutorial link on the right hand side,i think its on page 2 there is a section on doing a vintage motorcycle poster, this should give you a lot of step by step advice in cutting out and using layers etc.. as for the line up background.. even if you use a google image or something to start with. it most probably wont get the effect you want but it certainly should help in getting used to the processes needed. im no expert myself, and find im learing new little things day by day with ps

also just noticed at bottom of home page there is a most popular posts section.. "handy techniques for cutting out hair in photoshop'' again this may help you.. open up your file in ps and have the tutorial open in your browser follow the instructions and just have a play!.
for me, the best way to learn is to mess around with it.

It is very difficult to give advice in threads such as this when I am not 100% sure what you are trying to do, which programmes you are using and how much you understand - or without pictures.

I think you probably need to learn about layers, cutting out etc before you can think about merging photos ?

There is a tutorial section in the forum which might help you get started then when you have a specific question come and ask ?
