Hi

I'm hoping someone can give some guidance/tuition/awe-inspiring edit on the image below.

It was shot with a Canon SX120 compact camera and I have cropped a small strip off the top to cut out the quayside top, white van etc. My biggest gripe with the image is the over-exposure on the loose bit of wood (prow deck, I think) at the front of the shot. I use Gimp 2.6; I tried some 'burn' but the result looked awful (so I binned it).

Thanks,

I used the Recovery slider in Lightroom 3.6 to pull the highlights back, then added a small amount of contrast and vibrance to make it pop a bit more. To be honest, there wasn't really much detail in the blown highlights to begin with.

Using PSE9 the best I could do was to select the offending area make a layer of it. then use two adjustment clipping layers (Levels & brightness & contrast) to adjust it. but most of the detail is gone in the highlights.

Thank you both Garry and Paul.

I shouldn't have given you a sow's ear to work on ;)

I suppose the lesson learnt is to be more careful when taking the shot (I'll have to start bracketing and/or looking at the histogram) - relying on a quick glance of the rear screen in bright sunlight isn't the best way .

I'll have to work out how to apply your techniques to Gimp and then practise.

Much appreciated.

I've had another go - this time creating a layer so that I could work on the deck separately to the rest of the image, and I adjusted using curves. Thank you both for your help.
