Hi, my mac hard drive is almost full, my photoshop scratch disk are stored to an external hard drive 500mb. This happened a few months back so i cleared everything off my mac and re-installed everything. I've tried deleting things, i've stored all my photos to external hard drives so its not photos, videos or music.

I can't install lightroom because it needs a newer version mac, i tried updating my mac but there isn't enough space!!!

Should i buy an apple time capsule 3TB which is a bit pricey or just any external 3TB hard drive? I just want to solve this problem once and for all.

Has anyone else had this problem?

HELP PLEASE! :)

Thanks
Sam

Sam, I think you need to be a bit more specific; at least Mac model, age, disk size, OS version...

Anyway, it does sound odd; even with fairly substantial photos and some music, I've still got 150Gb free on a 500 GB disk.

It's Mac os x version 10.6.8 processor 2.5 GHz Intel core i5, 4GB

So to upgrade to 10.7+ it says i need 8gb of available space. So really I do need a hard drive.

Is the apple time capsule or normal hard drive better?

Sounds like you need more RAM

Might be worth this being shifted to the Computer section - I'll RTM it and see what the greenies do!

No need to waste you money on the time capsule. I use a standard USB hard drive for time machine backups.

If you buy a larger USB drive you can partition it. Half for time machine backups and half for files etc, freeing up you main drive for the OS and apps.

....because it needs a newer version mac

Can you explain exactly what you mean. Does it require a newer version mac, as you have said, or a newer version of the operating system?

I'm not sure it says my mac is version 10.6.8 and for the new lightroom 5 disc i have I need 10.7 or above.

i do think you need to update your osx version for lightroom 5, i've just bought a mac pro and had to upgrade

You emptied the trash, right?

It staggers me that Macs don't do this for you.

why would they? the trash (and recycle bin on windows) has always been a first point of being able to restore after deletion.

An immediate delete would be a bad thing, obvs. But I run tools that keep the trash to a manageable size and delete stuff that's been in there a while. It would be nice to have these as part of OS X.

If you're new to Macs, it's very easy to end up with a 100GB trash bin - especially if you take a lot of pictures. On the new SSDs that's kind of bad.

I wouldn't want my Mac making decisions like that. A recycle bin is there for a reason both on windows and Mac.

If the OS is going to delete the trash automatically then they may as well remove it all together.

indeed. it is best for the user to manage this (the user should be monitoring available disk space also).

Mac users are more intelligent and are quite capable of manually managing their recycle bin. :p

I tend to use shift-delete to delete which bypasses the Recycle Bin... If I want it gone, I want it gone - and yes, I'm prepared to live with the consequences ;). Not sure what the equivalent is on a Mac though...

One of our mac mini's keeps bleating about the disk being full, but it isn't. I rebuild permissions (Utilities > Disk Utility and select the drive on the left, then click repair disk permissions and let it run) and it seems to be find. Sometimes a simple restart is all that is required.

Confirm via Utilities > Activity Monitor and select Disk Usage. Also check out System Memory while you are there.
