Hi all,

I'm new too all this and looking for some advice, I know you lot are bound to be sick of answering newbie questions and I apologies in advance lol.

I'm hoping this will do for getting really good pics of cars and motor sport???

I'm wanting to know, is this set up good for taking pics of cars and getting track shots?

If not what lens is a good starter for this?

You ideally need a longer lens for motorsport work.

There's a few options in the 70-300mm field, both Tamron and Sigma make acceptable budget len's.

Have a search around, there is quite a bit of info on the forum on the subject.
 
Motorsport isn't really my thing but I think it would definitely help to get a longer lens, be it zoom or prime.

I would have a look at the Motorsport critique section on this forum and look for the kind of photos you want to be taking. Download an exif viewer for your web browser and you'll be able to see the details like the focal length used. From this you can get a better idea of what lens you'll need. If the exif of the photo isn't there just ask, I've found most people are happy to provide the details.
 
long shots normally need long lens/fast glass as most shots you looking for 1/1000+ shutter speed.
 
I was shooting my first motorsport at Silverstone last Thursday and was using a Sigma 150-500, whilst you don't really need 500 unless for close shots, something like 100-300 would be the range to go for. Shutter speeds of around 1/125 to 1/200 if you want to blur the background whilst panning, I tried 1/320 and that was a bit too fast, still I know for next time :)

I was at Silverstone on Sunday with my D90 & 18-105 kit lens and it is too short for motorsport (unless you want mainly track in pictures). My Nikon 70-300 VR has just arrived this morning though so hopefully next time I'll be able to get the shots that I wanted! :thumbs:

That said, the standard lens did an decent job, it's just that all the cars are a long way away as you are so far back from the track as a spectator.

well i am glad to hear that as at moment i am considering a zoom up to 300mm ...so sounds like my choice is the right one :)
