I finally got round to taking some pics this weekend, (did not use the dreaded green box, but I did use the preset sports mode, so only partly cheating!

Now later on in the day the flash popped up automatically, and I could not disable it, manual says it can be disabled by pressing the no flash button - but where is it on the camera - I cannot find the damn thing:( I have managed to disable it by using a menu when it was on manual mode, but it would be far better if I could just press a button to stop it. Could one of you who use this camera please tell me where the button is?

Great fun playing with the telephoto lens, much better than going to B&Q which is where I was supposed to be going, I thought it would have been rude to go past an event and not stop to take a few pics though

Its in menu - middle yellow spanner-> at the bottom "flash settings"
Top option is flash "enable/disable".

However its better if you get used to the "proper" modes : ie for sport use
set AFDrive = AIservo and then use either Av mode (to control the aperture) or Tv mode to define the speed. I prefer Av.

Thanks, thats how I did it, so at least I got that bit right!!

I have set it to AIservo so looks like that was ok as well, I was not expecting to be stopping to use it (only had 10-15 mins) and did not have time to look at the manual to use the proper settings, so I decided to get used to using the lens to follow the movement and get the timing of the pic right to start with hence the cop out! Next time I will try using the Av and Tv as you advised, but I will write down the settings before I go so they are ready for me and I don't have to look through the manual to find them :)

As an add on, what difference would it make to the shots when choosing between controlling the aperture and speed? I think the manual said it was personal preference and I'm assuming it would be the sharpness of the foreground against the background?

Hopefully I will be able to get out and play over the Christmas break, and I will try out the proper settings but it would be interesting to get views on this one.

The difference between aperture and speed is simple, but complex and is the nub of photography...

In noddy terms aperture and shutter speed work together to give you a correctly exposed shot.
ie : Correctly Metered shot @ ISOxxx = Light * Aperture size * Shutter speed

So if you fix Aperture (in Av) mode then you get: Correctly Metered shot @ ISO100 , f4 = Light * Shutter speed
(the shutter speed changes to get you the correct exposure)

Or if you fix in TV mode then you get : Correctly Metered shot @ ISO200 , 1/100th = Light * Aperture size
(the aperture changes to get you the correct exposure)

As always its not that simple. The aperture affects depth of field and shutter speed stops/blurrs movement

Hmm, I was along the right lines then. I want the movement to be frozen, so looks as if I need a faster shutter speed and let the rest tie in with that. I will start with fixing the shutter speed and see if that works so I can understand one bit fairly well before I start with the next one, or I will end up very confuzzled :)

spot on
