For thoise who can't be bothered to click on the links just to fin ouit what Rovb's taking about:

The first lens is a Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD Macro (£129)
The second is a Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DG Macro (£189)

I don't know anything about either of these lenses, but it doesn't seem like a reasonable comparison to me. Their functionality is very different indeed. I think the choice depends critically on what you want to do with it.

Sorry Stewart,

I put in the links because I didn't want to miss out any details.

As for an unreasonable comparison, I am after a telephoto zoom that has a range up to 300mm with marco functionality in there too. These are what I could find from singma and Tamron that fit my budget and tick the boxes. That fact that the sigma has a larger focal range didn't in my mind mean it was completely different in functionality in my mind.

Perhaps you wouldn't mind helping me out by explaining what you mean by

As a trader, perhaps even recommend what you feel maybe a better suited bit of kit.

I just looked at both links, tough choice, but as Stewart says it depends what you are going to do with them. Think i would go for the 70-300, better F range at the telephoto end, hope this helps, regards Damian. :)

PS Maybe worth going down to Park Cameras and trying both on your camera, see how they look to you.

thanks DJC,

Funily enough, I was intending to do just that, in fact park cameras is where I got my Camera from. Its a great shop, trouble is I always end up wanting more when I am in there. A prob common to all togs I would imagine. Thanks for your help, indeed it was a help.

The lens will get a varied use really so its hard to say its exact intended use. I have a tele thats got a range up to 200mm, i am just after that little bit more of a reach plus the ability to shoot macro.

A slight word of caution (from someone who did a similar thing) buying a do it all lens with such a wide range (particularily the Sigma) at that price is obviously going to compromise the quality of your pictures and for me was a disappointing experience (my kit lens produced much better quality). I ended up replacing my do it all with 3 lenses bought over a period of 18 months which ended up being much better for me.

:agree: Such lenses (especially at that end of the market) are, at best a comprimise. The "macro" nomenclature on the Sigma lens is a bit of a misnomer,as it's not real macro, but Sigma have a habit of slapping a Macro tag on any lens they think they can get away with it on.

As suggested previously, if Park are handy I'd pop down and try both lenses and see which one is nearest what you are looking for.

Thanks PSIfox for passing on that thread,

However I have used Park Cameras for years and never had any complaints, certainly none to make me post on a forum not to use them. That did seem very harsh on PC.

I hope the guy manages to get things sorted though....

:lol::lol::lol::lol:oh yes. I was in Warehouse Express showroom this afternoon buying a waterproof advantage timber groundsheet and have asked for a couple of items to be reserved for a couple of days. It never stops :gag:

Thanks smiffy, Ill keep watching the seler as currently its says none available.

How do you rate the lens? I have read a few reviews saying it goes very soft past 200mm. Whats your experience?

To be honest Rob I haven't really used it enough to form an opinion!
I've been sticking with the 50mm f1.7 and the Sony kit lens (which is better than I first thought to be honest) for what I have photographed so far.
I am off on holiday to Crete next Friday and will be taking the 70-300 with me then so will hopefully be able to report back after that.
But at £89.00 brand new, I won't complain too much
Rob
