Yes
Have recently tried to connect my mobile to my pc but I had an error, "There was a problem installing this software, USB to serial-ATA bridge. An errorr occured during the installation of the device. The data is invalid."

Now I thought it was just the phone but I've just tried to connect a new external hard-drive and it comes up with the same thing when it starts to copy the files. So its not the phone or drive, its the pc.

Can anyone help? im pretty desperate :(

Thanks, Trev

Try booting in safe mode and going to 'control panel>system>hardware>device manager". Now click view and select 'show hidden devices". At this point you should see all the device drivers listed for everything including things temporarily removed.

I would start by deleting all the usb port drivers from "Device Manager" plus anything referring to items plugged into the usb ports.

Check that there are no newer drivers specifically for your OS

You can then start again.

I think this it could be a problem with a corrupted motherboard driver for the "USB to serial-ATA bridge" I would go and download the lastest chipset drivers and install those.

and reboot, let windows find these devices for you and re-install them automatically. See if that cures it.

That would be my next step, and also see if there is a BIOS update from the mobo manufacturer.

I'd hold off on a bios update until you have tried all the other options, If you don't know what you are doing or are prepared for possible consequences it could ruin your whole weekend!!

I dont know what im doing so wont be trying that, I have seen a solution that says about reinstalling the os to fix damaged file in the driver cache folder?

anyone know where the c:\windows\inf file is? seems i should have it but cant find it? its been suggested that I may have to unhide it but have no idea how.

Maybe a system restore is the best option :(

Seems a bit drastic, youre best bet right now is option 1 and delete all usb drivers and then simply reboot. Windows will find them again and reinstall them for you, that should ensure that none of them are corrupted. Only then begin to look deeper.

i.e. (simply follow this order)

Start
Settings
Control Panel
System
Hardware
Device manager
USB devices (select here the ones you feel may be the issue, certainly all the root ones and mass storgare device ones)

Have you removed the drivers and added the latest chipset ones already?

Just delete them all and let windows find them again. It is likely to be something simple.

Do the USB stuff only, as per iant and cowaski and reboot.

If still no joy, Google your PC and download the newest chipset drivers.

before i uninstall the driver.. (my fear being they wont reinstall.....) I wanna say that it finds the right driver and when it starts copying the files, it then encounters a problem.
I tried installing the chipset from intel, but had the same problem and it gives an error

Do the remove drivers bit in safe mode and just re-boot

One more thing before I do... ( can u tell im worried that my mouse and keyboard will be useless after uninstall?) ..... in the system devices, the Intel(R) 915G/P/GV Processor to I/O Controller - 2580 has the yellow exclamation mark, and says it has no driver, if i try to reinstall the driver I get the same problem.
Im sure its to do with copying the files, therefore anything i disable, wont reinstall afterwards?

Just how many yellow icons are up in Device Manager?

As u can see, the problem is in the system devices, and I think its that that stopping new usb devices.

download the latest drivers. Run the program. restart in safe mode. delete all the chipset devices. restart.

well...... I did as suggested and ended up totally out of my depth with absolutely nothing working and ended up with a factory reset :(

Thanks for all the help guys.. at least all the usb devices work now lol...
And at least all my photography is on an extrenal drive :)

Thanks again

It was the next step anyway LOL !
