Help ordering correct kit

Hi all,

New to the forum and looking for some advice.

I've just bought 2x PW Plus II's, a Manfrotto MN026 swivel and I already have a 430 EX II. I'll be using these with an EOS 500D.

Basically, I understand that the 430 EX II doesn't have a sync socket internally (:cuckoo:) and I'm looking for a solution that will allow me to connect my flash to the PW and the swivel.

I'm offshore at the moment so I have no access to my gear and the PW's haven't arrived yet so I basically want to get everything ordered before I get home.

Can someone please advise me where I can buy a hot shoe sync system/cord that will allow me to shoot off camera when I get back?!

For example: Is this what I'm looking for to do the job? Will it connect to the swivel okay?

Yes, that would do it, but seriously, can you cancel the order for the PWs?

I used to have a pair and sold them - used the cash to buy five sets of Yongnuo RF-602 (Amazon) which I think are better as well as being a fraction of the cost. They do the same thing, plus they have a flash wake-up facility and a built in hot-shoe connection.

Those PWs are a bit archaic TBH. Or upgrade them to the Mini/Flex E-TTL Pocket Wizards? Now they are a bit special ;)

I've been on the phone to warehouse express and have ordered a lastolite sync block which looks a bit better quality than the kaiser item I linked to yesterday. Same idea but just looks more sturdy.

I'm happy to stay with the PW's to be honest. I don't actually want a trigger with e-ttl capability. I'd like to learn manually right from the start. I'm sure it has it's uses but for me at this point in time, I'm far more concerned about reliability. I've heard a lot of bad reports/reviews on almost every other wireless trigger available (in terms of reliability), but very little on the PW's. If they trigger faultlessly every time I send the signal then that's all that concerns me.

Disagree Pocket Wizards are amazing, take a lot of rough treatment, have incredible range, Very reliable and the batteries last for ever, yes their expensive - but quality photo gear is expensive. I wouldn't use anything else.

I know nothing about Canon speedlights - but is there a pc terminal? I occasionally use my PW's with a Nikon speedlight and I simply use a jack to pc cable. Speak to The Flashcentre about this, they will be able to tell you exactly what cable you need - they make them up.

Nobody said PWs were not amazing. They work brilliantly. But so do quite a few other triggers these days, at far, far lower cost.

The difference is, PW PlusII £320 a set, Yongnuo RF-602 £32 a set.

Phottix do a PW PlusII clone (compatible frequency with PWs) which is better made, has a shoot-through shoe, and is about half the price. They also do a an RF-602 lookalike on the higher 2.4 frequency, which is very nicely made, also a fraction of the PW price.

Seriously, I wouldn't buy PW Pluses (well I did, but sold them) but on the other hand Pocket Wizards's Mini/Flex auto-TTL system is flippin fantastic, now that their range issues are (almost) sorted :thumbs:
