help on ufo's

I get spots like these on long dark exposures and have thought they were whats known as hot pixels. I could be talking bull mind you, but they are easy to clone out and are only noticable in dark areas so don't worry me much.

Yep, hot pixels. Turn on 'long exposure noise reduction'. The camera will take an image with the shutter closed, taking the same time that it took the first time round. Sorts it out nicely, but a bit of a pain for exposures measured in minutes if you want to take another shot or check it before you move on.
 
Spaghetti hoops followed by a sneeze is my guess!!!!
