Hi,
I am currently writing a 5000 word essay for my photography foundation degree. The title is How have technology changed paparazzi photography in the digital era?.

I have spent lots of time on google and in libraries trying to find relevant information but the subject doesn't seem to be quite as big as I thought it would.

If anyway knows about or find information on this subject (history, present, specific type of technology, examples of manipulated photos, relevant paparazzi photographers, important years etc) I would appreciate it very much.

Good websites, articles and books would be extremely helpful.

Thank you!

Maria

Asking for help on one part of your course is fair enough, I guess, but don't you think that two is taking the mick just a tad???? :nono:

Maybe you should speak to your tutor or class-mates for some pointers?

Or maybe she's doing research and TP is a great resource in that respect. Also, her other thread was 6 months ago.

Sam is entitled to her opinion Marc, wether you like it or not.

Technology involves more than just the photographic aspect .... also think about mobile phones for communication, the Internet for 'what's happening' email etc...

Indeed........

I would look into the history of Photojournalism, and not just covering the UK. I would also think that this has some link to the rise of both the tabloid newspaper and also the gossip magazine. You need to put some history in for context. You have to mention the internet also, both with the speed that pics can be sent to agnecies for publishing, but also for viewing and absorbing these images. All paps are doing is feeding a demand, so you have to analyse this demand maybe? Googling "history of photojournalism" gave me a few good hits.

Paparazzi photography has next to nothing to do with photojournalism.....

Like weekend warriors are to wedding photography?.........:exit:

Not really, the art of the photojournalist is in telling a story with pictures, a paparazzo is only interested in catching a quick shot of a "celebrity" making a tit of themselves...

Change Celeb for bride and we are not far apart Graham..........

The only reason Paparazzi is so noted is that cretins buy the bloody magazines they supply. Who really cares if third rate actor A is shagging a donkey....................

Apart from the donkey of course.

Yes, but it is where it started.

Now I may not be correct, I was quite young, but the Diana at the Gym where the first Pap pictures I can think of, and that was a series of shots that told a story, even if it was just that she went to the gym. This has now evolved into Pap togging. Even if the story is "Britney went commando"

These were not really pap pics (the ones inside) they were taken with a hidden camera, more voyeur than paparazzi IMHO
Photographers had been "door stepping" and Papping celebs a lot longer than this, I remember pics of Liz Taylor and Richard Burton taken back in the 1060s, a tad before Diana.

Two old army colonels in the Officers mess in Burma.
"I say, did you hear about Corruthers?"
"No, what happened"
"Oh he was caught fornicating with a donkey"
"My Lord!. Female donkey or male donkey?"
"Oh female Donkey. Nothing strange about Corruthers..."

How about sharing your essay plan?

Another aspect.. and I've only thought about it as long as it's taken to eat my porridge this morning, is the changing nature of celebrity that's resulted from changes in non-photographic technology. With TV going digital and multi-multi-channel there's millions more hours of broadcasting to fill each year and creating non-celebrities has been the cheap option. I wouldn't just look at the supply side (how technology has affected the pap 'tog) but also the demand side (how technology has affected those that buy their output).

You shouldn't be struggling, never mind an essay - there's a thesis or book to be written on the subject.

Shooting on digital makes it harder for the "celeb"'s security to rip the film out. OK, it's still possible for them to remove the card(s) but there are many different doors and catches for them to master, so they may be able to do a 450d pretty quick but have no idea where to start with a Nikon.

Your showing your age!!:lol::lol:

The Diana ones are the first I remember, and I was so young I didn't get what the fuss was. it's a woman, excercising at the gym so what?

in my view pap's are a bunch or reckless scallies who have no talent what so ever and wish to make money at someone elses expense.
they dont even look throught the viewfinder, just press the shutter and machine gun!

Thanks for all your ideas and suggestions! I've got plenty to work with now.
And no, I certaintly haven't got all my info from asking for help on forums. I've read books and articles AND got photographers to interview. This is just a way to start thinking in different directions, and as I see it, no different from discussing with class mates or tutors (which I do every week). I haven't asked anyone to actually write the essay for me. My apologies if I made it sound like I was trying to cheat.

Anyway, thanks again for valuable help!

Emma, asking for advice is fine but finding the information you need is the first part of the research. You will be evaluated on this, as well as the analysis and written work, and your tutor is the right person to approach if you're a bit stuck. That's what he or she is there for. I think you're overstepping the mark by asking for such specific leads on a forum.

Google is all very well, but it's become too much of a one stop shop and all your classmates will probably be using it too. I suggest you think a bit more out of the box. Get hands on. Talk to people. Phone photographers, and newspapers/magazines and try to speak to editors and picture editors. Ask if you can quote them, or at least their publications. This will probably be an uphill battle, but persist. A lot of people will talk to you if you approach them the right way and you could get some valuable and original material, rather than just quoting written sources.

5,000 words is a short essay, so you shouldn't have too much difficulty, unless it's deciding what to use and what to leave out. That's part of the assignment too, and do check your title. You won't gain any marks the way it stands!

Don't be offended. I was a student quite a long time ago, and I wish you well. Truly!

Programme on BBC 1 now - called imagine about ron galella this is at least the third thread to mention it.
