I am currently studying Photo Imaging and have soon finished my first year. I've still got one project to finish though and I would really appreciate some help with it since I'm struggling.
I am to write an essay on advertising photography, comparing the 1920s to the 1980s. I need to know who were the leading photographers, what was special about that era and what they had in similar. I also need to be critical about their techniques, what did and didn't work etc. I have managed to find quite a lot of information on the 1920s, since that's when photography in advertising began, but I am finding it hard to get any got info on the 1980s.

If you are into advertising photography, please share your knowledge!;)
Cheers!
Maria

Thank you, I have obviously allready tried this though, and the information coming up is not what I'm looking for. I would not have asked for help here if I could find it on Google, but I appreciate you trying.

Not meaning to be rude but have you tried doing research the 'old-fashioned' way - going to your uni library and looking for some relevant books on the subject?

1980's, 10x8 transparencies were usually required, and transparency re-touchers earned a fortune! ;)

I have tried that too I'm afraid, but I haven't found any books or journals that speak about 1980s advertising photography in a critical and contextual way. I'm sure they're out there but I haven't been able to find them.

Don't know if it will be of any use but have a look at "The Art of Persuasion: History of Advertising Photography" It's a book published in the late 80s

You're welcome. You could try looking for "The Art Directors Index Of Photographers" from the 80's, most high end work was "designed " by art directors, and then photographers had to work out how to acheive the impossible!

I can't help with context and criticism, maybe it was the decade when sexism in advertising became unacceptable?

Good luck. :)

Thanks all of you! Definitely got some useful info there. Gonna try to find that book, and that poster is VERY 80s! :)
Let me know if you stumble over anything else useful.
Maria
