help new camera?

HI Kevin
Welcome to TP just go with your gut feeling and get the best you can afford
but it,s not the body you should aim at but best lens if your into wildlife.

Glass is everything....Get the best glass you can...any of the bodies you mention should get you a decent chance at some good shots....

walt-m and mipevo6 are absolutely spot on. If you're considering a 7d it sounds like your budget is around a grand. The glass you can get for that money will be a miles better investment than buying a new camera. It depends what type of wildlife you fancy shooting, if you can get reasonably close a 70-200mm f2.8 non is is the one, if you need more reach the 100-400mm L will do. If you're after the smaller stuff, get the 200mm f2.8L and a 60 or 100mm macro.
The 40d is a good camera and married with these lenses will be capable of cracking results

What glass do you have? Wildlife typically needs 300mm++ (not 70-300mm)... 7D high MP and AF will obviously help.

1D is great, but only with top glass - or if you can get in really close, as it has less reach, even compared to 40D.

I think the 7D pretty good in the wet have you seen that advert where they put it in the shower
also these a guy on youtube using it in a storm in some place abroad, try see how well it works when very wet and carried on working fine

If you have any EF-S lenses to go with your 40D, they won't fit onto the 1D but they will fit on the 7D. If they are the earlier EF version of the mount then they will fit on any of Canon's current lineup.

I have the 550D, which has basically the same 18mp sensor as the 7D. If I was in your position I'd definately go for the 7D on the grounds of lens reach and sensor resolution.

Reach is king for wildlife, so a 1.6 crop has the advantage over 1.3, the 7D is an excellent wildlife camera, but as others have said if you don't have long glass look at that first.

I have a 1D Mark IIN and I'm probably going to sell it and buy a 7D. The only thing that's stopping me is that the 1D is amazingly fast to focus on small wildlife and especially in poor light.I might rent a 7D for a day and test it.

I'll probably miss the feel of the 1D though!
