Hi guys.
I'm after some opinions/help

I've got 5 mark lll and I have the 24-105 l series lens. I've also got the 70-200mm is use 2.8 lens. My question is will there be a loss in quality by buying the mk3 extender. Or would I be as well saving to by a 400mm
Regards
Rob

Lucky man. Yes there will be a slight loss of image quality, but only you will notice it! Any one who just looks at the final picture wont notice any faults due to this combo.
The slight losses will be more due to extra lens shake at 400 mm equivalance and shooting through a greater depth of air, rather than the extra glass layers/equipment involved.
Not sure the 24-105 will let you mount the extender. That combination would give a grater and noticable loss of IQ anyway.

Yes, there will be because every additional air-glass surface is bringing a loss
of optical qualities, empirically!
Always test before buying.

Yes - definitely a loss of quality - but not noticeable to the majority of people. I use a mk2 1.4 - and even with that I sometimes see a little softness and more likely to get a shake... Overall though it's worth it and I'm happy with it. (Had I not thrown my camera into a pond by accident).

So in yours opinion would the slight loss in quality be ok until my funds would allows me to buy amother lens..
And another question!! (Sorry lol ) The 100-400 5.6 mark 1. Has anyone had problems? Canon guy today said they are hopes for reliability...

The sharpness you get with an extender/teleconverter is 90% dependent on the quality of the mother lens. All it does is magnify the central portion of the image.

Is your 70-200/2.8 the Mk1 or Mk2 version? The Mk2 holds up well with an extender, the Mk1 much less so. With the Mk2, most people find the sharpness loss of a 1.4x extender acceptable, but a few are disappointed with a 2x. What that actually means to you, only you can decide.

The Canon 100-400L Mk1 has been a top seller for many, many years, and has always held its value well. That doesn't happen with unreliable products.

As its mki go for a 400 either prime or the 100 400 if it were the mkii the extender route would have been ok, or sell the mki and using your 400 funds buy a mkii and extender?

Thanks for the responce. I think im going to upgrade my Mk1 to the Mk2 and then look at getting 100-400 is usm but only Mk1 version.
But saying that im off to bed soo and when i wake up in the morning i will prob changed my mind again lol confused.com

I owned a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM Lens for about 6 years. It was a good lens untill the push pull mechanism failed after an estimated 230,000 photographs.
I know quite a few guys own them and they like them very much.
It is a better lens than the Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Lens which I am using now.

The mark 1 70-200 2.8 with the 2x extender is diabolical. The 1.4x is ok not great. A sh 400 5.6 prime can be had for not much more than they charge for the mk3 extenders and would be much better if slightly less flexible.

Thanks guys.. I'm thinking now that I don't want to get rid of my 70-200 as with the quality of that lens and with 2.8 it producers very crisp images on my 5dmlll so after everyone's comments and some reading into this matter I'm gonna go for the 100-400 mark lll with poss then using 1.4 extender.
How's that sound guys?
