Hi Guys,

I know nothing about Photography but need help in determining which camera would be best. I am getting my father a camera for xmas to replace his Sony DSC52. It is in very old shape, 2Mp and not a lot else to it. He wants one now with at least 7MP and also one that will last a few years. He is not too much of a photographer but does take loads of photos. I was just wondering which camera would be the best out of the following 2 as they are both the same price. I am more like minded to go for the DMC-FZ8EB but am unsure. There must be a reason both are the same sort of price but differ in some way or another.

Hi Omen,

I think your dad might appreciate the FZ8 best of those 2. It's got an even bigger zoom (12x vs. 10x), is ergonomically more convenient to hold, and afaik FZ models have many more setting possibilities than the FX models do.
I'd say FX models are for beginners/snapshooters, and FZ models are for more experienced photogs who like to now and then try their hand at a bit of creative photography, and/or nature/wildlife photography, and/or sports photography.

And Steep is right: you can probably get better prices on both.

Thanks guys for the replies, I was thinking to go for the FZ model, seems there is more to it, was just a bit fazed as to why the other model was the same price. AS for the link to the same camera's but cheaper, many thanks for that.

@ Jaykay, I shall take a look at the canon IXUS range, I was reading somewhere on the net that this is Pansonics attempt at a comparable camera to the IXUS range. Blimmin hard getting your head around all of this stuff!!!

Many thanks all much appreciated.
