Hi guys,

I just treated myself to an LG IPS235 and connected it up only to find I can't increase the monitor resolution to the optimum 1920 x 1280. I also don't seem to be able to adjust the aspect ratio so I either have the option of everything being stretched in widescreen or only using 2/3 of the screen in "natural" mode.

Due to lack of other connections in my Dell Dimension 3100C (on Windows 7) I can only connect using the D-SUB / VGA connection and LG support told me this is why I can't have higher resolution.

Is there a way to change the aspect ratio so it looks normal until I get around to upgrading to a new PC with an HDMI or DVI-D connection in the meantime as currently I'm feeling like I've wasted £150 on this monitor.

All help appreciated as I'm not very technical when it comes to PC's etc....

Well for a start the monitor will only display at 1920 x 1080 max res.

Have you checked that you've got the latest driver for your graphics card? I suspect that it's an Intel onboard one, but even that should support 1080.

Apparently there are no PCI Express or AGP graphics slot just on board graphics.
two free PCI slots and a PCI Express x1 all for half height cards so, if you can find a gfx card that fits those you may be able to use the the monitor to it's proper capacity.

This appears to be a dell from 2006, so the innards are not going to be compatible with a lot of the hardware around today.

Have you got the latest driver for the graphics card? Also, what does it say the monitor type is?

Hi there,

When I tried updating the drivers, it said I had the most up-to-date drivers already installed so it wouldn't download updates ones.

It lists the monitor as 1. Generic PnP Monitor on standard VGA Graphics Adapter

Resolution now seems to go up to 1600 x 1200 but when I selected that it came up with an error saying something about D-SUB and reset itself to 1280 x 1024

doesnt sound like you have the correct graphics driver, "standard VGA graphic adapter" is a generic windows driver. go to dell support site, go to downloads, enter service tag, download and install graphics driver.

Who said anything about Win7?

Whoops - RTFOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Would downloading an updated driver solve the widescreen stretched effect if not get the full resolution?

I can live with the lack of ideal resolution in the short terms but the choice between all pics in LR3 looking stretched or else only using the middle 4:3 portion of the screen is driving me nuts!

I'm thinking it might be my cue to bring forward the upgrade of the computer forward. As soon as I get the funds in my account for my camera & computer gear fund our wedding fund I'll no doubt be posting on here for recommendations for where to look for a new photo-editing friendly PC!

The second link I posted gave the max resolution it was possible to achieve without a proper card.

Okay, thanks guys for your help. I'm using the fiancée's laptop in the meantime (which is newer than my old Dell) and at least that works at the full resolution. Just need to sneak LR3 and PSE9 onto it when she's not looking ;)
