Help needed with Bowens...

Hi I have recently bought two Bowens gemini 500pro

On one unit the fan kicks in as soon as the modelling light is turned on, the other does not...which is normal (i.e. should the fans be on all the time, or should they only come on if the unit over heats)...or is it a sign of something else, e.g. the modelling light needs replacing?

Any help appreciated, thanks

Wouldn't it make sense to ask Bowens?

What Garry, though if both lights are the same then all being equal I'd expect them to act the same...eg. same modifier, same power settings they should be doing the same and if they're not then one must be faulty

That's my thinking, unless there is a setting in the setup menu or something or some secret 'fan on' Button I don't know about? Or maybe just a sign the lamp needs replacing soon?

I know the models below the pro's don't have any fan cooling anyway so maybe it's only really needed of your hammering the lights (something I'm not likely to do and can easily live with)

I've got a couple of 500 pros... just checked them and the fans both come on as soon as the modelling lights are turned on (from cold).

Thanks think I must have a broken fan in one on the units
:(

I am hoping it will just mean I can't shoot as long without having to let the units cool down, as I won't push that them that hard anyway (well for 99% of my shooting) , and not anything more serious.

Maybe they should develop LED modeling lights... They might not need fans at all then!

By the way, if you end up sending it to Bowens for repair, be prepared to be without it for a while... You may be luckier than me but on the two occasions I've had to use their repair service they've taken weeks!

Thanks how reasonably priced do you feel the repair was?

Well I talked to Bowens and they think either, fan unit broken, loose wire, or fan unit disconnected. Good news is they say will operate normally but will overheat quicker than expected.

I honestly can't remember... it was a while ago! I don't think it was outrageous though... just slow. I got the impression (and I may be wrong) that it's just one guy in a workshop with a huge backlog of repairs stacked up!
