I've somehow very stupidly got the default app to open BIN (.bin) files set to photoshop.
This file type is the one used by Nikon for firmware updates.
I'm running Windows 10 and in the default app. list in settings it allows me to change to another (listed) app. but not to remove it completely and leave it blank.
In order to use BIN files there needs to no associated app (as far as I know).

Can anyone help me with this? I've googled it and see some solutions suggested that involve changes to registry, something I am nervous about doing, due to my lack of
competence.

Thanks BB. If you read through it none of the suggestions worked and the OP asked his IT friend to solve it.
Still looking.

Oooops! sorry I missed that :coat:

Thanks Jonathan. This takes me a step closer but I am not there yet.
when I type in ftype Photoshop.bin it does not recognise it. I've tried lots of different ways of typing this in (e.g. Photoshopcc2019) to no avail.
I can check the file type associations by typing assoc, but .bin is not on this list, nor are many of the others listed in default apps by file type list.
I am lost.

If you type assoc in the command window, a lot of the stuff will scroll out of sight at the top of the window; it only holds about 250 lines, so the earliest I could scroll up to was .mpg
Use
Code:
assoc | more
to page the output; <space> will scroll up one screen full, <enter> will scroll up one line.

Thanks Tori but it just seems to repeat the same page again.
I've tried going into registry editor to find this and it does not recognise .bin files.

Am I missing something? If it's a camera firmware binary I don't see why it would matter. Changing the Windows file association shouldn't change the file itself, and the camera (which applies the update) doesn't care how your PC saw the file before you copied it to the media card. If you took that media card and browsed it on a second computer that didn't have the .bin association set, it wouldn't give it a Photoshop icon and it wouldn't launch PS if you clicked the file.

Retune. Yes, your are missing that when I tried it previously it did not work, but now it does.
Thank you for this. Problem solved.
Basically it confirms that my tech knowledge is closer to zero than I previously thought.
Merry Christmas.

If you've solved the problem, hasn't your tech knowledge just gone up?

Yes, from near zero to a little above that.
Thanks who all who offered help.
