Hi. I am a Media student who is planning on doing photography dissertation later on this year. I am strugling with chosing the right topic, interesting and worth researching since my course is not really photography concentrated. Im into documentary photography and photojournalism, and i live in Edinburgh which could be a good starting point for the project. Any ideas for a good topic will be much appreciated!

I wonder if you could look to see if there is beauty to be found in the back streets of town. You have a research question and the opportunity for photographs. I dont know anything about Photography research though so tell us more what is expected- is it just words you have to submit or photos and words? Just be careful though if you are in dodgy areas.

Thanks for reply, that sound like a good idea, although i find it difficult to concentrate on still life or architecture. People are the ones who inspire me to take photos that is why i think i should make a project about people. It has to be words and photos as well.
My first few ideas were:
1. Photoreportage from the Fringe Festival, it is the longest festival on the world. I could possibly play around with the subject a little bit.
2. Foreign identity in the cosmopolitan city - Edinburgh
3. The use of photography for propaganda

You think i could go anywhere with any of this subjects???

Two thoughts spring to my mind:

Citizen Journalism - the impact Digital Photography / technology has had on news coverage (look at 9/11 and the July underground bombongs as prime examples)

Digital Re-Touching - the effects this has on audiences / public - could lead into an investigation into aspirations of perfection. There is a good article on this in this month's Professional Photographer magazine.

Spooks
