:'(:'(:'(

We were out in Norfolk today, and after sitting out the showers we started to enjoy some beautiful sunshine. I was just beginning to take some shots when I got the following Error 99 message:

Shooting is not possible. Turn the power switch to <off> and <on> again or reinstall the battery.

Well I did that, I also changed batteries, switched lenses a few times, checked the contact points etc etc... I then tried live view shooting, which worked, buuut the images all had this at the bottom of them:

Please help someone. This camera is what keeps me sane (well saner than without it anyway .. but joking aside I can't be without it :'( ).

Err99 is general "divide by cucumber" error. Something's wrong, but no idea what.

URRK It looks like its your shutter thats knackered.
I'd be looking for the packaging to send it back to get fixed.

Nooooooo :'(

Would this be a send back to the seller or send to Canon for repairs? I only bought it a little while ago. I guess I should PM Kerso :'(

Oh Jo.... I hope its something much less.

SOGA?

I got it on March the first, give or take a day or two. I've PM'ed Kerso. I hope this can be sorted really quick. Starting to feel a bit panicky :(

Edit: I was just saying to Chris.. now I can see why it's a good idea to have 2 bodies. But that don't really help me now, grrr.

I was going to get from kerso but i am worried about this type of thing happening. Please update and tell me how you get on with kerso.

sale of goods act :)

You'll be able to either request a repair or a replacement, at your choice if you only bought it in March:

the Sale of goods act said:
• If a consumer chooses to request a repair or replacement, then for the first six months after purchase it will be for the retailer to prove the goods did conform to contract (e.g. were not inherently faulty)

• A purchaser who is a consumer, i.e. is not buying in the course of a business, can alternatively request a repair or replacement.

Did the image look like this on playback in the camera, or just after you imported the images to PC?

It was like that on play back and on uploading :(

Thanks for the info on SOGA guys. But as you say Matty Kerso is a nice guy so I'm sure (OK I am desperately hoping) that it will be just fine.

I have a wedding to do on June 28th, Jo.,,,.. but if you are without a camera after that I will gladly send you my 20d to use till you get it back.

i had pictures turn out like that once, but my fault was my compact flashcard being faulty, only a thought have you tried a different cf card ?

Found this on a forum relating to your error 99...

'On the Canon forums they tell me that Canon firmware is just not very reliable. Some of the problems seem to be related to poor memory management (I'm a sw engineer) so a couple of things that seem to help:

Reformat your CF card between every use

Stop shooting BEFORE the remaining-shots count gets to "1". Unlike the d100, which uses a fixed-size Raw file, the Canon uses a variable-sized Raw file, and it sometimes "misunderestimates" whether it will have enough space for that one, last, shot.'

Don't know if this will help? :suspect:

Have you tried swapping cards Jo?
Thats similar to what I got when my card failed.
Hope its not serious what ever it is

edit must type faster and read all the posts ;)

Yeah I changed CF cards too, but it was still the same.

Janice that's a very kind offer hun, but I really do hope I have it sorted by then. I'm not sure I can even go more than a few days .

That sort of effect on an image usually means the shutter is on the way out :(
I know how u feel about missing your camera.

Jo, if you cannot get your 40d sorted quickly, you are welcome to borrow my 20d.

Jo, try the canon centre of excellence at Elstree, sorry I don't have the address here as I'm in the US at the mo, but the phone no from memory is 0080022666767 opt i and 3 I think. Otherwise pm sue fisher, she has it.

Kerso's invoice works with them, but it may take about 10 days.

George

Thanks you for your kind offer Tim (it is Tim right?), but I wouldn't feel right accepting. Plus I'd be frightened stiff of hurting yours.

George thanks for that. I'll probably give them a ring to see if they can give me an idea of how serious it is. But other than that I think I'll be seeking a replacment from Kerso. I'm sure he will be fine with that. Just got to wait for him to reply to my Pm now. 10 Days would be far too long for me. I'll probably be in melt down by then :(.

Sorry to hear that... makes me nervous as my new 40D is the only camera I have and worse still, it came with a usa warranty. The idiot on ebay failed to mention it was a usa product. I shall be keeping an eye out, once I have saved, for a 2nd hand 20 or 30D body.

Jo, Please call Canon UK ASAP, they will hopefully sort this out quickly for you if it turns out it isn't a dodgy battery or CF card! George who has replied to this thread had a problem with something a while back and they were very quick in helping him out. Make sure you have the UK invoice I supplied as you need this for the USA warranty on Canon bodies. Lenses are different they are honoured regardless of UK invoice as they all carry International warranty. Please let me know today how you get on. Ian.

Yeah thanks Kerso.

OK so I called the canon helpline thingy, and I have to wait for someone to call me. But I have been told I will be getting a replacement camera. But it may take a minium of 6 days. Soooo upset right now.

This is getting stupid! Colchester repair centre just called me asking me do I need a repair? Then after I confirmed I did (errr doh!) she said I need to send it in! I told her that I was told UPS would be coming to pick it up... now she has gone off to ask, because they don't normally do that. :'(

Edited out the rest/

I dont think this should be done in the open forum like this? Perhaps you and kerso talk about it in private, and then you post whatever happens, should you need to?

Gary.

Perhaps you're right, and if it were a private sale I would totally agree, but it's not.

I would agree with that

At the end of the day, Kerson has a great rep on the site, and he will do the right thing if you give him half a chance. You are almost jumping the gun and dragging his name a little through the mud, without justification - YET.

He has not broken your camera, and whilst maybe he should have just said "replacement will be sorted", he has asked you to seek advice from Canon UK as this worked for a previous customer. I know your upset and angry, I would be too, but to take it out on the seller is wrong IMO. You shoud annoyed at Canon first and foremost if anyone.

Give kerso a chance to sort this before you kick him in the gonads too hard! :)

Gary.

OK, since I'm not thinking straight I'll trust you oppionion guys. I'll edit out the info and PM kerso. Thanks.

I think that the above posts are very fair comment Gary and firmly believe that they should be "open".
There are many thread praising Ian ( Kerso) to the point of almost ass licking.
I think that its only fair that when things go pear shaped they should also be given a fair hearing

I also spoke to Trading Standards. They told me that under the SOGA you (kerso/Ian) are not obliged to send me a replacement if I asked. Unless I put it in writing. If you were then to refuse it would be a problem. However I was told that I shouldn't be the one sorting out a repair, you should be. That you advising me to speak to Canon was wrong and under the SOGA this should have been your responsibility to sort out either refund, repair or replacement. Though I am guessing you left it to me because of the urgency in which I need this seeing to .

I never thought I would say this but I kind of wish I had bought it from Jessops or the like now. Then I would have been able to take it in store today and get it replaced presumably :'(.

Well, all I can do is wish you good luck Jo! here's to a speedy solution

Fair enough, but all this talk of trading standards already???

Being delighted with first class prices and service is not ass licking, just normal!!! :)

I am not trying to be bullish, just in my opinion (which you can freely choose to ignore!:)) is that he should be given a fair chance to reply and sort it out.

Sorry if I have upset you, not my intention. Would be a shame to let a small issue ruin the guys great rep, thats all.

G.

I'm guilty of praising Ian at every oportunity due to the many faultless deals i have had with him, but will watch this with interest.

I also agree that there is no harm in this being "in-the-open" as it helps to show both side of the story.

You replied while I was so I didn't see this till just now.

I'm not having a go at Kerso, not at all. I know it's ot his fault the camera is faulty.

I actually just replied here because Kerso replied to the thread also. Like I said I'm not thinking straight.. it's not simply a matter of me being upset or angry.. I'm having panic attacks and .. well lets jjst say it isn't that simple. I don't really want to disguss that. but please trsut me when I say it's not that simple. I don't want a big argument. I want my camera working again or replaced :(
