Hi all,

Can anyone offer any advice on making a silhouette out of a colour
image please?

Thanks in advance.

I think it's going to depend on the picture a bit, can you post en example so we can see.
I tend to shoot them in camera to a certain extent by exposing for the background (sky maybe?) but it should be possible to get something with PP.

Hi Wayne,

Hoping to make something out of these but im going back next week so
if I need to re-shoot then I will.

Hi Paul

Not sure if this is what you meant, my process was to select the model refine the edges until you get the right mask that you want then simply create a new layer and using your selection fill with black, inverse then fill the surround with white.
I'm sure there are plenty of other methods but the critical thing is the selection, spend some time to get that right and the next steps should be easy whatever method you use.
Hope this helps

Thanks very much for that bud, easier than i thought. I guess to do it in camera would be to light the subject from behind?

I'd light the background and expose for the highlights, but with that subject it might be better to do as Wayne has and do it in photoshop

Will have a go with the lighting but I think you could be right.

No probs

If you can back light the model you should be able to get a halo of light around her which will make getting your selection edges much easier in PS.

As Swanseamale said, expose for the background and don't worry about front lighting the subject. You ought to get a pretty good silhouette in camera but you can improve it in PS.
