Hi there,I'm new to the world of photography [apart from an ancient film camera & compact digital camera ] Now I,d like to re kindle the interest & learn a new hobby.
Firstly I need a new camera , and hopefully someone out there can give me some help & advice ! It needs to be quite light as some of them seem to be quite heavy . I am at the moment dithering between a Nikon 3100 or the Panasonic Lumix G3.
Has anyone had experience of either these cameras, would they be suitable for a complete beginner, or can any one suggest an alternative?
I would value all your comments

Hi welcome to TP

I always say

Go to the shops and try as many as you can.

Don't forget Canon, Sony, Pentax all make cameras.
Buy the one that feels most comfortable in your hands, after all you will be holding it.
It will be the camera you find has the most intuitive button layout and control menu.
The price will be suited to your budget.

Don't forget to include in the budget a memory card and a bag if not included in a package.

Remember all the cameras can take good picture's, it is you however that make them great.

Never buy on the basis of other people saying "this one is great". It may be for them but not always for you. Buying a camera is a very personal choice.

I dont know what the lens line up for the Panasonic is like, but there are a vast number of different lenses available for the Nikon if you decide to upgrade further down the line. Obvioulsly you will have the same options for the Canon and the Sony if i'm right is the old Minolta so you might be able to use old lenses there too!
As for memory cards they are stupidly cheap now, Try 7dayshop.com for them.
Like Mark has already said though, its a very personal choice that you need to make yourself and take you time over the decision,

You can't beat picking them up. The ranges with plastic bodied lenses will be lighter to hold and carry but a bit less robust. Most kit lenses are quite light. My 18-55 one weighs nothing hardly.

The G3 is lighter but if you do or want to do lowlight photography then it will probably be a let down as it has a smaller sensor and is more prone to noise at higher ISOs. Also worth looking at the Sony NEX series as they have full sized APS-C sensors like you get in a DSLR but in a smaller body.

What old film camera did you have?
