I have been inputting information on my family tree for years, the programme is on my desk top which I was hoping to change to a new one, so hoping to be able to transfer to my laptop, I went into back up and downloaded the files on to a flash drive and all seemed ok however, although I have installed the programme on my laptop from the original disk when I plugged the flash drive in, it couldn't be read. I know I can re-input all the information manually, but there is so much information on there, coupled with the fact that I need to re-enter the details on a new desk top, it would take me forever. Any ideas how I can transfer the information from one to the other please?
As anyone who has read my posts will know, I am not very computer litterate so simple answers if possible please, many thanks in advance,

If you still have your Desktop can you not "Export" your Data to a Memory Stick and "Import" to the Laptop

Not sure I can offer anything other than to say......................having looked for "Family Tree Maker" I see a fair number of such 'online' sites as well as software programs.

Maybe if you stated the exact program and ideally the website of the maker??

PS some more info as I said might help, another user of the same software hereabouts would be ideal because they could have some similarity of experience to you to share?

When you plug the flash drive into the laptop do you get an options box come up from Windows?

If you have still got the program on your desktop open it and click on help at the top, there should be an option that says About, click on that and you will get the version number, do the same steps on the laptop and see if the version numbers are the same. If they are different then the laptop version may need updating, there should be an option, probably also in the help menu, to check for updates.

This may be FTM version specific so it may help to know which version you're running?

If you're going to use the file on a different installation then you should 'export' and not 'back-up' from the 'File' drop down options......be sure to select 'entire file' and not 'selected individuals'.

Thanks guys, I'll try the suggestions, I'll also post more details of which FTM I'm using, and what the pop up box actually says when plugging the Flash drive.
