Not used this one (yet) but it may help ... whatever else you do, don't use the drive for anything until you have recovered the files. If the free progs (or even fee paid) don't work there are specialist data recovery companies that will be able to help

I did this last year on a HDD - luckily not my photo HDD - and I used Recuva Pro which did a pretty good job of recovering a large amount of data:

My HDD was 4 TB and I downloaded the recovered files to another external HDD but it took quite a long time sorting through all the stuff because it recovered bits and pieces from all over the place.
I'm assuming BTW that you only did a quick format - a full format renders the files almost unrecoverable.
I'm also assuming that the HDD wasn't encrypted.
