Help needed for college entry

bung em up Cam - just stay clear of the In depth critique section for a couple of weeks - though to be fair, I put one in there today, and don't think anyone visits it - or it's so crap, not worthy of a response!!!

Domestic cat - as wild animal - I will go along with that given the responses I get when calling her in / trying to get her down from the tree she can climb but cannot descend........

I am sure all will be fine....... As you say with Preston Nikon store being your place, no shortage of kit!!!..........

Lol! Thanks for the support Lynton. Motherly fluffiness notwithstanding! ;-)

We have three cats, one older black and white girl, a young (1 year old) black and white tabby male kitten who is huge for his age, and a tiny little (eleven month old) spotted tabby girl kitten (who Cam looks after). She's Cam's mini-leopard, so hopefully he'll be able to get some good pics. If he takes hundreds over the next few days, he should have a handful of good ones I would think. Then we'll tackle the exhibition when Darren's off. The written work we can fit in around everything else now he's officially left school.

Incidentally, the head of the photography department things that "it shouldn't take more than one weekend"!!!

Cameron, post away! It's a great forum most of the time, just Rob's got GOMS* today ;)

There's some amazing pictures posted by some fantastic photographers on here, please don't miss out on it.

I have to admit I'm a little shocked of what is being asked of you for the entry...I did a HEFC (equivelent to A level) and the entire course wasn't much more than 2 projects like yours. I think they've given you a big project to see if your committed, - people who are just taking the course for a laugh wouldn't be able to do such a project in a short space of time.

They've really been trying to put people off doing the course, if they haven't taken art at GCSE, basically saying that it's oversubscribed and that he doesn't stand a chance. It's so unfair, as Cameron wanted to take art GCSE, but the school wouldn't let him, even though he was good. They steered him into a course he hated - product design, which doesn't count as entry to the photography course. However, someone independent of the photography course explained to us that we should not worry, and that people who have done art won't automatically get a place over Cameron. Basically, they said that his project will be marked as if it's a GCSE and given a grade accordingly. If he gets a B, for example, then he will get a place ahead of someone who gets a C. They are, however, making it difficult to discourage all but the most determined.

Sorry, don't mean to speak for Cam all the time. He said he is going to answer his thread.

Ahhh, it makes more sense now. I suppose it's the fairest way of doing it - effectively having to have a cousework based exam to get onto the course.

Cam, when you put your pictures together, analyse them as much as you can, explain settings you used in yours, the reasons why you did things. Words like aperture, vantage point, shutter speed, frame...they're all "buzz words". If you use a wide aperture on one of your pics, state that, and state the effect that it has - really state the obvious so a complete noob who has no idea what a camera is, can understand it.

For my HEFC I did just that and got more marks for doing so.

Nattelie, that's some very sound advice - thanks. Cam's appreciative too. He will be back to his computer at some point soon to answer all the helpful peeps. What you say makes perfect sense, thanks.

I hate to be playing the bad guy yet again (especially considering your origins) but are you for real?

Going on a photography course but have no list of photographers who inspire you?

I was looking at photographs before I could even hold a camera, let alone afford one: I would scour the magazines and newspapers for images I liked and cut them out for my bedroom cork-board and scrap-books...

Do you know why they only give you 6 days?

Because as an aspiring photographer you should already know this stuff!

You should have your finger on the pulse to see what's going-on all the time.
I disagree. For me this only sounds like a dull way of testing one side of motivation.

I haven't got a clue about famous photographers (because I forget the name instantly after looking at the image) or exhibitions, but good luck to Cameron!

Arent there any graduation shows on right now? There are loads up here with graduating students showing their work.

Hi Vicky,

Sorry, I meant to answer you, but I got so tied up with some horrible comments.

Yes, the one we've got planned is indeed a graduation exhibition. That starts the day before his assignment is due in, so we're looking for alternatives in case it's not all we're hoping for, and so that we're not putting all eggs in one basket.

Thanks for your support for and encouragement of Cameron. It is much appreciated.

Yeah, me too! I saw Nick Brandt's photos a couple of weeks ago and was gobsmacked by his pictures, but his name did not stay in my brain, and then he was mentioned again today. Some people have a memory for such things and some don't. In Cameron's case, he's only just discovered a love for photography and already has some togs he's keen on, so it was ridiculous for someone to imply that he should have been collecting pictures from being an infant and know all the photographers' names! Sadly, he's stirred the ****** and has now run away, without even apologising. Maybe the mods warned him off?

Hi everyone, thank you for the lovely comments and help you have given me. As my mum has said, the photographers were Christine and Michel Denis-Huot. They take some great pictures so if you haven't already done so, maybe you could have a look. I have had a look at Nick Brandt and i love the atmosphere he creates in his pictures. I have yet to look at Andy Rouse and Heather Angel and so will do so tomorrow.

Rob. What you have said has not upset me, merely made an impression. I asked if anyone knew the photographer's names. Not if they could tell me who might inspire me. I have only just discovered photography and so do not have a list of photographers in my mind. Although some people have kindly introduced me to some. I have also only just started using TP (as you can tell from my 3 posts) and do not want to make an enemy in my first thread.

Lynton. Thank you for your support and i will make sure i post the pics I use for my project for you to see =)

Nattelie. Thank you also for the support and advice. I will bare in mind what you have said when annotating my pictures. And thank you for the folders. They are much appreciated =). I look forward to meeting you at the zoo =D

Thank you to everyone else for your help. Vicky and Toby =). Unfortunately it is getting late now and so i cannot reply to everyone. Thank you again for your help, it is much appreciated!

ALL he wants to know is if there are any photography exhibitions on in the next few days local to the Preston/Lancashire area.

(I am sure that asking this question is not a breach of homework protocols.)

:eek:Bloody hell I have to admit that he has come to the best place for advice and info, you can google as much as you like but 1 on 1 advice is priceless. I find the advice I need on here yes I google sometimes to save mythering folk on here.

I am a bit shocked by this! and for the second time in a month speechless.

yup, and if you want to get anywhere in life you need to network with people.. you dont make contacts and friends by searching google.

What an absolutely brilliant point Gary.

Fortunately, Cameron has had lots of support and good wishes from lots of very lovely, supportive people, and fortunately, the negative comments from a couple of people have not put him off networking. I will encourage him to continue to ask questions on this wonderful forum.

Just a quick idea.... Do you have a local camera club? If so maybe worth contacting the secretary as he or she may know if something on. Also local uni or adult education centre sometimes show students work at the end of term??? Worth a look.

Good idea Lynton, thanks. Darren says he was thinking of joining a local club. We are planning to go to the local graduate exhibition. It starts the day before his project is due in, so if we can find any others to go to beforehand, we will. I haven't yet had chance to have a good look, as I've been spending too much time on here defending my young pup! ;) But I will have a good look.

What a strange thread. A simple question by the OP and 2 suspensions.

Good luck Cameron and keep posting.
Rob's unfluffed advice, wit and opinions on this forum have been great IMHO, although he got things wrong on this occaission.

Hope everyone makes up soon!

To be clear, we know Rob's a good egg, and while we do enjoy (and cringe at sometimes) his often forthright opinions.....his delivery does sometimes go way beyond the boundaries of 'restrained', and sometimes we can't just let it slide.

And even though a person's past actions and manner does give them a certain leeway, we can't always ignore it....for the sake of the atmosphere and community really.

What a very strange response this thread has had from some - I understood what Cameron was asking...

It does sound like quite a hardcore entry project but I'm sure you will do great. Just because you don't have all the answers at your finger tips right now doesn't mean you aren't cut out for the course or dedicated enough.

Afraid I can't help with the Exhibition bit - but your idea of using the family moggies as subjects is sound as far as I'm concerned. You've been inspired by people shooting big cats - you have been inspired to shoot little cats... works for me and I'm sure the subject is less important that how you go about it

Good luck and please don't be put off posting your work here - TP is a really good resource, it would be a shame not to use it because of a few people ;)

{comment removed} unlike real life, forums have an ignore button :D

No real help on exhibitions, could you perhaps just go to a local art gallery and do a report on what's there? I know it's not the exact assignment but a lot will probably just do nothing if there's no exhibition, going slightly offscript is better than going in empty handed IMO.

Don't know any photographers either, despite loving photos and photography since I was little, I've never had any real interest in famous togs! I mainly wanted to add my support for you :)

Sorry matty, enjoy your beer

My geography is pretty awful, but is this anywhere near you? http://www.harrismuseum.org.uk/current-exhibitions/337-visions-of-an-industrial-age.html

It says it's on 27th June - 5th september - I know it's not animals but could be interesting anyway? Says it's got the oldest known photographs of preston :)

That's all I can find!

Hi Gemma,

Thanks very much for your support for Cameron. Your geography is spot on in this case. We're actually going there on Thursday to see an African exhibition, but there's nothing to stop us going to the industrial age exhibition too. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. Darren looked at what they had to offer, yesterday, but didn't mention that one. Maybe he didn't notice it.

Cam's already taken over 140 pictures of the kitties doing their thang, so his keenness is not in question (other peeps' comments notwithstanding).

I have just been having problems with my welder.....

So I found a welding forum, joined it and used the search button. Found someone with the same welder and a SIMILAR question. Asked a question on that thread relating to the picture already posted and got a response in 5 minutes.

Perfect !!

This is the way it normally works here, I hope that Rob and Lornholio come back, read the thread again and realise that he wasn't trying to get others to do his work just to ask a reasonable question and that we can all go back to being friends again. I really don't like falling out on a public forum. I have made a lot of friends on here and spend a lot of time here. I don't want to start ignoring people etc.

comments removed there Mrs Cowasaki, poking a wasp nest with a stick isnt going to help. People are entitled to post opinions, its the rude bits that get people banned. Continuing to inflame the situation wont help and wont be tolerated.

Bradford's only about a hour's drive from Preston, and worth it for a look around the National Media Museum. Not sure what they have on at the moment, but there's always something worth a look!

thread cleaned. keep a lid on it please folks.

I didn't mean to poke a wasp nest with a stick Matty. I was merely agreeing with the point which someone else actually made. I don't call that wasp nest poking - but I respect your decision to remove that bit.

Thanks, I'll take a look.

Mrs Cowasaki,

May I request for you too empty a few messages from your inbox please, as I would like to briefly speak to you in person. :)

Toby, Nicks images are absolutely stunning!!! Funnily enough, I was making some elephant cufflinks for a customer a couple of weeks ago, and had to find images of elephants so that I could put some drawings together. I came across some of Nick's elephant photos and they made a big impression on me.

Sorry I can't offer any advice on Cameron finding a photography exhibition  but your quote above in bold made me laugh:lol:

 Sorry Missus, I am no help whatsoever  Whats that saying? Simple things amuse simple people....thats me

Wish I'd noticed it. I'm always inadvertently using once innocent terms which are now a bit dodgy!
