I have just received the project information to get into my college photography course and I need to produce a project (in 6 days) which includes my own work PLUS:

1) Find a photographer that inspires me and write about their work.

I was watching National Geographic Channel on Sunday and saw a french couple who were photographing African wildlife and in particular large cats. They really inspired me and that is the kind of stuff I would like to do. I cannot find their names now though - Did anyone watch this and can you remember their names.

2) I need to visit a photography exhibition and write a report about it.

Does anyone know of any photography exhibitions ongoing in the next 3-4 days that are local to Preston/Lancashire (I am going to the UCLAN African exhibition at the Harris).

Hey,

I can't help specifically for either questions but, all I can offer is a link to national geographics top ten photos of 2009.

http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2009/12/top-ten-photography

Hope this is of some help. :)

P.s I'm kind of in your position too, however this is a part of my A2, it consists of a 3000word essay/presentation on a personal study of a photographer or technique.

Thanks we saw the program about these pictures but it was the program straight afterwards that had the French couple in it.

That's a tight time frame.

Sorry cannot help with their names - have you checked out the national geographic TV Channel website There may be something in there.

If not, maybe you'll have to "pretend" to be inspired by another photographer...... I am assuming by your ~askai in your user name and your location, you are somewhat related to Cowasaki and Mrs Cowasaki? If so, then a certain Cowasaki has put up some stunning images on here of late. (Or does it really have to be a famous photographer?) If not, and if you are related to Cowasaki I am thinking an entirely different direction you could go with on this one........ guaranteed to get noticed!

I just found it for him. I typed "african wildlife photographers french couple" into Google, and it came up as the first entry. They are Christine and Michel Denis-Huot. Mums are useful sometimes!

Any advice regarding local exhibitions would be gladly received, however.

Indeed he is :)

Mrs_C has just found them so sorted number 1

Thanks for the  re some of my work :)

It is looking like a Japanese tourist convention round here or the Preston Nikon Centre! There are 5 of us on here too now

Nice spot Lynton!!

@Camasaki... Try Nick Brandt. He's got some pretty awesome african wildlife stuff. All black and white, plus apparently shoots in film, and is exclusive to african wildlife.

He's released 3 absolutely ace books in the past couple of years!

Thanks very much Toby. We'll check out Nick Brandt. I've just started Cam's photography book by ordering him "Leopards and Cheetahs: The Lords of the Savannah" by Christine and Michel Denis-Huot. Sounds like I might have to add a couple of Nick Brandt books to his collection at some point too! ;-)

Thanks also MagicMynx - we'll check them out.

They're a little bit pricey, as a student myself I nearly passed out at the price! But they're top-notch images!

Also try Heather Angel, shes shot some pretty awesome stuff in her time...

Are there any local art museums? Have you checked your local paper? What about your local government site or city life paper online?

One of those are bound to have detals of an exhibition.

Nat, the exhibition has to be specifically a photography exhibition and they have only given him 6 days to produce the finished entry project plus I'm working 4 of those with the only car now!

Yes indeedy, Camasaki is our son, youngest of four in the Cowasaki household. Sadly it does have to be a famous photographer, but we're working on it. We appreciate peeps' suggestions very much.

I think 6 days is a bit silly for them to ask, IMHO. Up here though there's an art museum that often has photography exhibitions, sometimes local libraries have photography exhibitions and there's a few other places too, hence those suggestions ;) Gumtree may have some photography exhibitions advertised.

Thanks again Toby - you're a good'un!

Toby, Nicks images are absolutely stunning!!! Funnily enough, I was making some elephant cufflinks for a customer a couple of weeks ago, and had to find images of elephants so that I could put some drawings together. I came across some of Nick's elephant photos and they made a big impression on me.

Thanks again Toby - you're a good'un!

Andy Rouse has also shot some amazing big cats. There is one specific shot I'm thinking of, a backlit female in the early morning light. I'll go and see if I can find it :)

Thanks, glad I could be of help! and... I knew I'd missed someone! Andy Rouse another crackin' wildlife tog!

Crazy time frames if there's no photography specific exhibition on within a reasonable distance this week.........

Physical actual in person visit or virtual visit?????????:thinking::thinking:

Unfortunately physical, actual, in person visit. Ridiculous time frame indeed!

Arent there any graduation shows on right now? There are loads up here with graduating students showing their work.

I hate to be playing the bad guy yet again (especially considering your origins) but are you for real?

Going on a photography course but have no list of photographers who inspire you?

I was looking at photographs before I could even hold a camera, let alone afford one: I would scour the magazines and newspapers for images I liked and cut them out for my bedroom cork-board and scrap-books...

Do you know why they only give you 6 days?

Because as an aspiring photographer you should already know this stuff!

You should have your finger on the pulse to see what's going-on all the time.

Guess, fair points on part 1 there Rob, in your usual direct way.......:naughty:

However for part 2 - if no exhibitions on??????

Pretty sure there's a few on in London right now...

http://www.photonet.org.uk/index.php?pxid=964

http://www.londondrum.com/events/?cat=24

Including "Exposed: Voyeurism, Surveillance and the Camera" at the Tate, Modern

And yes, it means you'll have to travel...don't expect it to come to you...work for it - that's what your tutors will expect from you - putting the effort in to a greater degree than those others on the course - you need to stand out: demonstrate your committment from Day-1.

Unfortunately London is not an option, I'm working Sunday to Wednesday. I am thinking the Africa exhibition at Preston is likely to be our best bet.

I understand what you are saying about photographers but Cam is new to photography and really enjoys it. The photography A level is his 4th A level and something for enjoyment together with the other three. He knows the types of images he likes though.

OK - when people say 'college' I tend to assume degree-courses, not A-Levels at FE or 6th Form Colleges...

I wouldn't sweat it too much. When I applied to get into college I really had no favourite photographers and I'm sure I named someone really obvious like Mario Testino in my group interview. I really had no clue that photography even had a pulse!

As long as Cameron is enthusiastic and shows to the tutors that he really wants to be in the course it will work for him. Arkady is right with showing commitment from day 1.

Would've been fab if it was the beginning of this month, there was a photography exhibition at St Mary’s Brownedge Lane Bamber Bridge.

However this may be of help...

Fri 16 Jul - Sat 31 Jul
2010 Chorley Photographic Society Annual Exhibition
Astley Hall, Chorley. Larger of the two upstairs exhibition rooms.
Opening times are Sat and Sun 12-5pm (last admission 4pm)

(dunno how close that is, just used good olde google)

No, he is 16 and this is one of 4 A levels. He has had a DSLR for a short while and we have been teaching him. He enjoys photography but it isn't his absolute passion. Taking it as one of 4 subjects is going to give him something less academic that he can enjoy between other subjects. He really does love animal and Safari type photography.

That Rouse-geezer then...he's a lying toe-rag, but takes a nice snap...

Thought for a minute you were a Merkin! It seems to be Americans who call university college. Over here in the UK college is between school and university - unless of course you're oxbridge, etc.

And I think you're being a little harsh on Cameron there Rob. He's only come to appreciate photography recently, after Darren got into it, and after we bought him a camera for Christmas. We can't all be as keen as you from the womb. Have a little compassion. Just because it's a new-found love (and actually something he's decided he wants to do for a career) doesn't mean he's not keen or won't be any good at it.

Compassion....?

Hmmmmmmm......

Nahhhhhhhhhh.....

Sorry Rob, I forgot, you don't do compassion.

Also, we are sadly not in a position to be able to afford a trip to London for an exhibition - I'd dearly love to. It'll have to be local given the budget and time frame.

I was hoping that a young lad (16) would be able to come on the forum and ask for help, and get some helpful answers - and most of the posters have been helpful, thanks for that peeps - but you've got the wrong end of the stick Rob, and you're being pretty mean.

wow - welcome to TP - Cameron - just as well you are the fifth ~asaki......... otherwise you'd have done a :exit:

Seems there has been a certain amount of confusion as to "college" v "degree" which Darren has now since clarified......

Personally I would say that for someone new to photography (wonder where you got the bug from :lol: - know anyone you can borrow a body or lens from???? :naughty::naughty: [Wheels has got some shiny kit!]) who enjoys it and at the moment is considering that as an A level then an all-day trip of some 300+ miles is a bit steep once time, cost, finances and family factored in.

Rob - I fully understand where you are coming from, clipping pics as a kid etc, if as a [insert appropriate age here] you had such an interest in something, but until a couple of years back photography didn't really interest me, (interests and hobbies change with time) and sitting here as a 37 yr old, I am wishing 21 years ago that

a) it did
b) my school / college did an A level in it.......

Like Cameron it would be a 4th "A" and in my situation to fully contrast with the science triad......

Personally I think the short timescale of the "review a Photography exhibition" is shortsighted and Pathetic. In all likelihood the 6th form college is going to be within a 30min trip of Chez ~asaki, - it's not like going off to the other end of the country for Uni....... (give it two years Cameron - Freedom!!!)..... so in reality the school / college should have ensured there are suitable exhibitions on within the time frame otherwise they have failed miserably..........

bit like asking you to catch a fart and paint it green.......

an all-day trip of some 300+ miles is a bit steep once time, cost, finances and family factored in.

Exactly the problem. We have one car. We got the letter this morning and I am working Sun-Wed. A train ticket as an adult (which he is classed as) at no notice is well over £100. I cannot get time off and Helen is not up to accompanying him on a train!

There is a photography exhibition on in Preston that covers the type of photography that Cameron likes so it is possible and I will take him to it on thursday morning. He will then have to do that third of the project and we will take it to the college before they close. That will give him from now until Wednesday to do the other part of the project which should be ok. He has pretty much decided to treat the domestic cats as wild animals and photograph them. He has his own D40x and will borrow my 80-200 f2.8 and 1.4TC so should be able to get some nice shots.

He would have posted this himself but he is a little shell shocked at the response to his first post and is not now keen on even posting his pictures for critique which was the original plan !

Thank you Lynton. Hopefully Cam will answer his own post at some point but he's not on his computer at the moment and he's is a little bit taken aback at a certain member's responses.

Incidentally, the assignment involves a few things, and all in 7 days!!!:

He has to pick a photographer who inspires him (which is not a problem), and using that inspiration, he has to pick an aspect of his life and document it in that style, using different methods of photography and perspectives, etc.

Write a piece about his chosen artist/photographer, showing four images, annotating and evaluating and saying why he is influenced by them.

He also has to write about documentary photography and what it means.

Then the other element is to visit a photography exhibition and write a review, interpreting what he's seen, including what the photographers were trying to say, etc.

As far as I'm concerned, that's a tall order in the timescale - but we're not complaining - he'll do what's been asked of him. He only posted to ask if anyone knew the names of two photographers (which I quickly found the answer to), and if anyone knew of any local exhibitions. I think his questions were fair enough, as did everyone else involved in this thread, including yourself Lynton. Sorry, I've hijacked your post to have another whinge!
