Yes
Well I have gone and outdone myself this morning but Unleaded in my Diesel!!:'(

Good news is I realised and only put a fiver in then £20 of Diesel will it be ok ??????

Come on admit it we've all done it!

So long as you fill your tank with diesel it should be Ok Simon. It's when you put diesel in a petrol that's a bit nasty!

:help: me that's who

Just spoke to hubby about this and he said he would get as much diesel in as you can to diloute the petrol. he did say if you wanted to risk it.. ideally you would flush the tank. if it was him he would flush the tank. but if you don't want to do that you really need to get more diesel in there as much as you can

It may even clean the injectors. Fill her up with diesel and keep the revs up for a short while.

A gallon of petrol in a diesel will do no harm if as already suggested you fill up the rest of the tank with diesel. You probably won't notice a thing and as said it will probably just clean your injectors. Diesel contains solvents to clean the injectors etc. anyway you've just added another gallon is all. I've known several people do similar and had no adverse effects. If you are really worried keep topping the tank up as you use it and the petrol will become more diluted.

Well I have been back to the garage and filled all the way to the top so now I have approx 5l of unleaded and 50l of diesel and for good measure a dose of redex.
I feel such a plum

some time ago my wife did it with our old landy.
fortunately to the same degree as yourself.
filled the tank with diesel, and no probs.
as nilafgin suggested, keep topping up to further dilute, asnd you should be fine.

if it seperates while the vehicle is stood , petrol should be at the top.
when your driving it will mix with the diesel.

I have been advised to leave my cap off so the petrol will evaporate so fingers toes and eyes crossed everything will be ok

If it blows up take a picture:)

:DCheers Mark that makes me feel so much better

Not with certain french cars, its definately the other way round....and yes, I have done it too, total muppetdom! :bonk:

On th eother hand, we currently have a wee beasty sitting fornlornly in the corner of our workshops, waiting some TLC. It has been sitting around in someone elses workshops for 10 years, it has a petrol engine that has just had diesel poured down the plug holes to free the rings....I am told its an old trick ;)

Could take a while for a gallon to evaporate, hope you aren't planning on going anywhere for a while.

Been out at lunch in the car did about 6 miles no problems so far next mission is to get home tonight

should be fine, some people put petrol in diesels as cold weather protection, it having a lower freezing temp

WIll be fine, I put a fiver of petrol in my New diesel Megane, topped it up with another £20 of diesel, and then kept topping. DOn't know about the evaporation thing, don't fuel tanks have an anti vapour fitting on the filler system??

I would have got it pumped and flushed, I was told diesel works as a lubricant for the injector pump, due to the small parts and high pressure of modern injector pump common rail diesel engines it only takes a few seconds with no lube to send the fuel pump into oblivion.

a comparison with an old land rover isn't really fair as they're designed to run on parrafin in 3rd world countries.

How does the wrong fuel type affect engines?
Petrol in a diesel engine

Breakdown organisations put the figure of petrol misfuelling at around 150,000 cars a year, with repair bills totalling hundreds of millions of pounds.

Petrol will strip your diesel engine of the lubricant used to keep it ticking over and cause metal components to grate against each other and disintegrate.

This runs the risk of damaging the fuel pump and fuel-injection systems, or wrecking an engine completely if used for a significant amount of time.

To make matters worse pre-ignition systems start fuel pumps in new diesel models when car doors are unlocked. This cuts out the time it takes for new diesel engines to warm up, but means that diesel engines can be ruined by petrol by simply unlocking doors.

The fuel pump and injection systems and filters will likely need to be replaced on new models, while an entire engine could be wrecked beyond repair if it has been run for long enough. Regardless of the extent of the damage, the repair bill could potentially run into thousands of pounds.

Avoiding turning the engine over or stopping as soon as possible is vital to prevent more damage to the engine in these circumstances. A fuel-tank drain could be sufficient in such cases to prevent damage.

if it was a fairly empty tank and only a fiver was put in, then I would have thought that if you fill it to the brim with diesel it SHOULD be ok

might run a little differently though

Don't do it again ;)
