Hi,

I have been asked to photograph a dance troupe of about twenty girls. I am doing it purely for experience as I am still studying it. However I am unsure about what type of lens to use? I am mostly experienced in portrait photography so photos of the girls individually wouldnt be a problem however I know they will want group shots and thats what scaring the hell out of me!

I have a canon 400d, a 50mm prime lens (probably for the portraits) and an 18-200mm sigma lens. I am thinking of selling the sigma as I am finding it really hard to get any sort of sharpness out of it. Can you recommend a focal length or specific lens to use?

Thanks!

How much money have you got? :-)

The 50mm might be OK depending on the space you have. You might need something wider but if you have enough room to distance yourself from the groups it would work. Otherwise you're going to need something with a wider angle but what you go for depends how much you can spend.

Whichever you choose, make sure you keep a reasonable depth - you probably want to go with f8 to get the whole group but if they are spaced out you might need an even smaller app. And that means of course, you might have trouble getting enough light unless you have an external flash.

Just remember that the 50mm is actually going to be 80mm on the 400D body.

Thanks. I mean I would be willing to spend a lot of money investing in a good lens. I also do a lot of gig photography so would like a lens to incorporate that. On my course I can rent out certain lens i.e canon 14mm, 20mm? Would those be suitable?

Also I am going to purchase a flash and was thinking of the speedlite 430? Any feedback?
