Hi Guys and gals,
I've been asked by my picture agency to photograph a fashion show next week Tuesday. Anyone done these sort of things before. Suggestions of lenses to use (canon) and would you recommend I get a second body.
DO you know if flash if allowed? or does it depend on venue.

Bump. If any photographers arn't at the fashion shows in London, please respond. ! day to go, and I'm gonna look a twit next to the pros. Stop laughing that man!
 
Hey, I'm nowhere near picture agency standard, but I went along to a few of the free shows at Melbourne fashion week this month. 95% of the shots I took with my 70-200 f4, I would've killed for the 2.8 to throw the background out a bit more though. I took the nifty fifty too on a 2nd body (film) but was too far from the action most of the time.

One show was really good though and allowed us to get together with the models off stage and take some more shots from close range so to speak.

No problem using flash, which was really a necessity when using the zoom as the light was just poor. Nice to get some light in the girls' eyes too.

Probably no help there as these were really very informal events as far as fashion shows go. Damn good fun though, and the first time I'd ever considered this type of photography.

Is there no chance of ringing the event location or the promoter?

I use Nikon but I would use my 80-200mm f2.8 - almost wide open - you probably will not be allowed to use flash. Get at the end of the catwalk so you shoot the models head on.
 
I think a lot with depend on how far from the stage you are going to be and I guess the lighting is different for most :( I would just take a lot of kit if possible :) Probably a mono pod too if you have one.
 
Cheers guys. I'll let you know how I do. I spoke to a tog from the mail yesterday who may also be doing the show. He told me he uses a 300mm and 70-200, monopod, and stepladders.
 
Well, I've just got back in from the fashion show. I mainly just kept my eye on the photographer from Getty. On this occasion I found the 70-200 was ok, a 24-70 would have been better, shame as I don't own one of those yet. There were about 24 photographers most with 2 or 3 cameras round their neck. I was in the third row on a wobbly set a ladders another photographer let me use.
My agency only needed me to get shots of Naomi Campbell and Boy George. My camera decided to not want to do anything both times Naomi appeared. I still managed 6 shots which I've sent to the agency, and further 18 misc shots. When I ger up in the morning I'll see what they've put on, If anything.
I think I need a pro body camera which wont look under not so perfect conditions. I've seen a low use (700 actuations) canon 1ds mk11 which looks tempting.
