Hi everyone

Iam in a need of urgent help.I turned on my Canon 1ds and started taking pictures when suddenly images started coming black in lcd screen.I removed battery, card, lens and I even updated firmware without success.I tried different functions till I got to sensor cleaning when I noticed that shutter hadnt moved so I could clean sensor. Is there any other way of repairing this fault than changing shutter? My camera has slightly over 11000 actuations only I believe shutter is suppose to last over 100000 actuations???HELP HELP:bang:

If I remember correctly Shutter actuations are actually given as a mean figure, so some will fail before, some after, but the average over the production run will be around 100,000

The best thing you can do Mike is take it in for repair, or at least a check up to confirm the worst.
A shutter replacement (as you probably already know) isn't going to be cheap.

Sorry to hear it mate :'(

T.

But if the camera has only had 11,000 actuations and the average is ten times that surely they arent going to charge you? if so thats rediculous.

Your right mate if it was a new camera, a 1Ds is just over seven years out of production.

You tell me about .Iam absolutely gutted!I checked repair cost in USA $399.I cannot believe the cost as the new shutter is only £30 you know

I'm with you there,

parts cost = peanuts,

labour + taxes = an arm and a leg.

Still a great camera though but it may be time to upgrade.

Hey Thomas

In what part of Helsinki are you in.I was born in Finland too although I dont live there anymore:clap:

Where abouts were you born then?

Actually I dont plan to upgrade right now as I bought this bloody camera 1 week ago from ebay and I am waiting for seller to contact me.I have warranty on it for 30 days

Yeah, I started down the strobist route in March this year, I really wanted to use Alien Bee's or White Lightnings but I needed to invest in a much more reliable camera so funds were tight, the whole strobist movement has given me a lot of hope and triumph!

Mike

You don't say exactly where you are but I would to the Canon web site and find one of their aproved repairers near you and ask them to give you a quote. You might be surprised

I got a a quote from Southern Photo Technical Service which a Authorized Service Center for CANON based in USA.I am in Gibraltar and I contacted our local dealer and he would ship the camera to Madrid(Spain).I have a friend who used our local dealer and he never got back his batterygrip. It somehow got lost on the way.I have checked canon's uk repair centres and they seem to be interested in camera's which have been bought from UK:cuckoo:

Of course they are :bang: Canon wouldn't expect the guy who gets 189,000 actuations to pay extra so they can repair the OP's for free :cuckoo:

People quoting a mean is bloomin' useless without some indicator of variability (standard deviation, standard error or ideally a 95% confidence interval)

bad luck mate, awesome piece of kit
if it's from ebay...how do you know the number of shots it's taken? I presume there is a tally somewhere apart from just the jpeg number
