Right.. have decided against going for another zoom lens for shooting motocross. I have concluded that it might be a nice idea to go for a wide angled lens?
Has anyone tried this for shooting sports? Bearing in mind that generally in motocross you are really close to the action.
I thought that I may be able to get some nice effects by being really low to teh ground shooting with a wide lens?

any advice appreciated

Trevor

I used a Sigma 10-20 many moons ago on my D200. It was practically bolted to a spread of jumps (equestrian) with a radio trigger.

Took a bit of playing around with, but got some superb results! Not so much sellable to clients, but magazines and portfolio work for sure ;)

20mm sounds like I wont quite be close enough at the times i need a little bit of zoom.
Can you get bigger wide angled lenses? say up to about 100mm?

Define "wide angle" then :) It means what it says on the tin! for a zoom, 18mm is the normal starting point (18-200mm etc). I'd say wide-angle was even wider than the kit lens.

I'd say for your 350D, there's the Sigma 10-20mm, Canon 10-22mm or the Tamron 11-18mm...

As you've got the kit lens already why not try shooting with it ? . It will give you an idea of whether you need more of 10-20 or 24-70 / 24-105.

Then again you might find that 18-55 is ideal :)

Now theres an idea.
A friend of mine has a practise track... now why don't I use that track to practise too? ohhhhh great idea. :bonk::bonk:
I think I may go for the 24-105mm as I still will have the focal range needed :)

Sigma 10-20mm is cool for sports shots...here's a couple from a rugby match earlier this year:

I think you'd need to be dangerously extremely close to the action with something like a Sigma-10-20

24-105 IS L is a superb lens. It's probably going to give you the range you're looking for since i don't think anything under 20mm on a APS-C sensor will do Motorsport justice (apart from and extreme closeup panning shot but those won't be many)...
