Help, my wife is forcing me to buy a D700!

I spend allot of my free time trying to find cheap kit! I really can't help myself.

2 nights ago I was brave enough to tell my wife I was wanting to take advantage of the £60 cash back and interest free credit at Jessops to buy a D90.

She said "and what are you going to want in a years time?", Because every time I buy kit I stupidly say it will be the last thing I want!

So she is suggesting I save until I can buy half a D700 and have the rest on credit. But she doesn't understand the full frame issue so I would need to replace my 18-105mm and I'm not sure what my Sigma 70-200mm will look like in full frame. I'm short if I buy a D700 I'll want new kit!

I'm trying to suggest I buy the Nikon 90, the D80 battery grip and a 17-55mm f2.8 Instead. as it the same price.

Interestingly she accused me of compromising so I will end up wanting a D700 next year, While at the SAME time telling my at I can't spend £1000 on a Lens! :thinking:

So what would you guys think? (Yes I know I have a fantastic wife!) :D

Besides a I don't think I'm a good enough photographer to deserve a D700

Get the D700 and keep an eye out at places like Ffordes and MPB for second hand lenses at good prices :)

If you are careful and buy the more expensive lenses second hand, then they are always worth what you paid for them and you don't suffer any depreciation. :)

This is the first time I have bought any lenses at the higher end of the scale from new. I've always managed the pennies to get me top class kit at reasonable prices.
 
Decide on what you really want to do with your photography and then stick with it. Mr Rolls (of Rolls Royce fame) said " The quality remains long after the price is forgotten".
Also do not take advantage of your good wife.
 
Your wife is telling you to buy a D700 and you're asking us what to do???

I bought a D90 back in November (upgraded from a D60) and I'm now yearning for a D700, so I say it's a no brainer! I'm often caught daydreaming as to how my 50mm 1.4 will look on a full frame body :love:
 
Stuart if your wife says you should have a d700 I think its important to keep her happy... do you deserve it? hell yea! do you get up each day and work hard.. yes, do you love photography and it gives you a great buz to take great pics.. yes! then you deserve every bit of a d700 and your photography will be better for it, as for the glass, replace your 18-105 with a second hand 70-200 or 80-200 and dont tell her the price, your 18-105 will cover a god chunk of cost anyhow.
Sit back and admire the best photos youve taken in your life with a nice glass of wine whilst cuddling up to your wife and thank her for taking an interst in what you do and for encouraging you to upgrade... job done!

i would say go for the D700 and dont do what i did! i bought the D300 in September and am now looking to sell it already! I almost bought the 700 but thought maybe it was a jump too high from my D70, I now regret it. I want full frame and need high ISO with min noise, go for it otherwise you will end up throwing money away, like me!

I was thinking of replacing the 18-105 with the older af-s 28-70mm f2.8?

Everytime my wife notices a new lens, I tell her it cost £80. Thankfully she knows as much about glass as I want her to :D
 
I managed to sneak my new (second hand) Sigma 150mm macro in my camera bag without the missus noticing at all. Selling old kit and replacing often confuses them and an Iphone means she hardly notices me walking around any more either :lol:

I say go for it.

Then look stunned a few days later when you mention "OMG you know what, this lens won't work on this new camera you forced me to buy! It's all your fault! If I got the D90 like I said I wanted to all along It would have been okay"!

Should work :shrug: :runaway:
 
I sold my quite new D90 and all the 3 lenses I had for it...

Bought a Panasonic GF1 with the 20mm Pancake lens, WOW what a great little camera, do me I said with just the one lens! So bought very small bag for it.

How could I believe myself, now bought a 45mm and a 45-200mm and back to the bigger bag again..

Will I ever learn and please tell me I'm not alone doing all this.


By the way I really do just just love this little GF1 is super in my eyes.
 
I'll play Devil's Advocate here, if you get a D700, how happy will you be in 8 months time or whatever when the D800 comes out? Will you be back to square one, wanting to upgrade again?

If you're having to finance the body will you have any money left over to buy the quality of glass the sensor demands or are you going to be happy with the mediocre results that would result from sticking a low rent lens on a £1700 body?
 
My wife has given up on me :lol:. She has her D90 and I have my D700.

I keep saying I'll downsize to a D90 as we don't do a lot of shooting BUT I just love the FF sensor.

Now if the bring out a D90X with a FF sensor then I'll change.........wishful thinking :D

Go for the D700 you'll be blown away.
 
Just buy the damned thing. You know she's right!! :thumbs: :D :D :D

Well that is my point!

I think the D700 is far more camera than I need, so if I bought one I doubt very much I would start looking around for another camera. being able to go to 6400iso and 8 fps and 51 af points. But I would end up wanting to replace the Sigma 70-200mm.

I think a D90 with 17-55mm a nice package that I can afford!

I can't quite convince myself that buying a D700 is the intelligent thing to do.

Still want one though!

What a dilemma :D whilst the D90 is indeed a fantastic camera, it doesn't compare to the D700, particularly high ISO,s however i still say full frame is'nt all it's cracked up to be, but that could be my capabilities and i may be missing a lot, but having both D90 and D700 the ISO on the D700 is far superior, but if you don't want or won't ever need the high ISO capabilities you won't go wrong with the D90, i must admit i felt out of my league when i purchased my D700, and could of spent the money on other things, but i'm glad i did now, as i know i definitely won't be upgrading for a few years unless i win the lottery, the D700 is more than enough for my needs, i think if i where in your position i would go for the D700 before the missus changes her mind :)

What is the point? Its the ISO performance that is the main/only attraction of the D700. Its just stunning.

At the moment I HATE my D60 "double or nothing approach" to ISO handling

The D300s Makes sense if you are a sports photographer. it would also be able to handle the old Zeiss primes but other than that I can't see why its twice the price of the D90.

Another question is because of the D700 larger pixels does it "need" High quality glass or can you get away with cheaper glass?

I too am beginning to get this reaction from my other half :nono:

Havn't even told her about my recent and very modest purchase, the Giotto's tripod hiding in the wardrobe yet! :naughty: :D

Depends on the glass and what you call cheap, just to give you an example, last year i went out for the day with the "Digital Depot urban meet" Stuart from DD bought some lenses along for everybody to try out, i tried out the Nikon 24-70mm 2.8 on my D700, now i already own the Tamron 28-75mm 2.8, having tried both i would say the image quality wasn't that different, and in some cases you would'nt know which lens was being used, the difference in the price is quite a hike, i picked up my Tamron used for about £220, the Nikon retails at about £1200ish, there are some very good budget FF lenses about to be had at a very decent price, it's just sussing them out :)

Depends what you are looking to achieve - for pixel-counting 'perfection' you will always need the best lenses you can get.

To take photographs it is not the camera, it's ISO settings or the lens - it is being in the right place at the right time to capture the image you want to see.

It is a nice package. Very nice package. The way I'm looking at it, there are a few plus and minus for each.

D90 +
Cropped sensor. You get that extra reach.
Movies. For the odd video you'd like to record.
Smaller
D90-
Not as good as the D700 in low light.
Not a full sensor, so technically you'll need f2.8 glass on cropped to equal f4 glass on FF
SD memory cards

D700+
Low light shooting.
FF bonus.
Better FPS

D700-
Loss of that 1.5 extra reach that cropped gives.
Might have to change up some lenses (and buy new ones if you really need extra zoom)
No movie. Gimmick or no gimmick, the odd time you put something on youtube, it looks great.
Might need to buy new memory cards.
Successor right around the corner, will prices drop and you'll get the D700 for a great price or will you be angry *** you wanted the newer one?

I'm currently shooting a D90 and loving it although I do wish I had a D700. But I wouldn't want to lose the video and 1.5 (or whatever it exactly is) magnification of the cropped sensor. I don't do too much low light photos yet so that's not a problem. Ideal situation would be both cameras... ;)

TG thank for telling me about the tamron 28-75mmm I had just assumed it was a cropped frame lens.
 
I've just got a D300s, I was contemplating at buying a D700 now, for only £500 more than what I got my D300s for. I asked for opinions and opinion was it was a bit too much for more money. Even though I do want a D700 and know already that it's gonna be on the cards, probably next year!
But I'd only need to replace one of my lenses cos recently I've been making sure my lenses are non DX so that the costs in future are less!

I'd say go for it.
I upgraded from 40x to 80 to a 300s now.

Funnily enough the £110 lens I have just bought from the classified section will be £25 from ebay when I take it home :naughty: :suspect:

If I didn't carshare with my Brother-in-law it may have just found it's way into my camera bag without comment ;)

Glad it's not just me that has to apply the SWMBO factor to price conversions :lol:

Stu - if your wife insists on you having a D700 then don't argue man. You can "discuss" the glass when you have the body.
 
I would go for the lower range camera and better glass, no point having an amazing camera with rubbish glass.



I managed to go form a 70-200 f4 to a 300mm f4 and now to a 400mm f5.6 without my parents realising :D
 
You could argue "Well YOU wanted me to buy the D700 now I HAVE to get some better lenses...."

Mind you if she's reading this read............
 
I would say go the D300s route you will not lose hardly any money if you decided to upgrade to the D700 at a later date and if the D300s was good enough for you it would save all the glass swapping and a lot of the credit hassles :shrug:
 
I've been thinking

All I want is to be happy with the kit I've got! I'm fed up of constantly wanting this and that. I feel that buying a D700 is just going to be opening the flood gates! Where as the D90 is a enthusiasts camera for a hobbyist photographer. which is what I am.

I'm just not convinced because so many of you have bought the D90/D300 and are still wanting the D700,

I use this lens on a d700 and i think it takes fantastic pics.
 
I went for the D300 because of the extra reach with the crop sensor, I haven't ruled out a FF yet but it will have to stay on the wish list for a couple of years.
 
You're wife sounds like my oh! I upgrade to the D300 and am left "wanting" a D700... she said to me recently "Ah, sure you'll eventually end up getting a D700 anyway so stop worrying about it!"

Anyway, it depends what you photograph. If you need the reach get the D90. If you'll take advantage of the full frame save for the D700. Buy what you'll enjoy, don't buy what what you think you deserve. If you can save and eventually afford the D700, and will relish that full frame, it's a no brainer. I will eventually get one myself, I've already started saving :lol:

LOL - same here. My boyfriend said the other day 'wasn't your camera silver'. I'd upgraded from the Canon 400d to the 5d without mentioning it (well, it's my money & he would only have moaned...he doesn't understand photography).

He still hasn't noticed that my black Canon zoom lens turned into a white L class lens last year :lol:.
 
My hubby starting egging me on to get a 5D MkII last Thursday after I showed him some photos on Flickr taken by a contact of mine. I thought I could clearly see when he'd upgraded his camera from xxxD to 40D to 5D MkII just by looking at his photos. 2 days later I took the plunge. I didn't need much encouragement :lol:
