Ref the 40D and grip that I'v got running on EBay which has attracted 36 watchers and 17 bids with just under 2 days to go.

I've been approached by an EBayer with a UK address and a great looking feedback score on over 40 transactions - only a handful of which have been in the past 12 months - with a request that if he pays B-I-N price and actual shipping costs will I ship it direct to a relative in Indonesia.

I've got as far as being favourable in principle, have established that fully insured, tracked global express delivery adds about £130 to the overall package and am currently awaiting his response. (Whether this kills the deal remains to be seen.)

I've also asked for, but not yet received, the EBayer's UK address and I have not yet received a delivery address. EBay will allow me to send messages to the EBayer but not give me a direct contact email address and I have not yet asked the EBayer for it.

Obviously if the transaction goes ahead I can drain my paypal account right quick before actually shipping the camera so whilst I feel that I should be secure, something is causing me to be a little nervous.

(If OTOH I let my auction run I shall either reach my reserve price or be faced with relisting.)

I've never had a problem with international transactions on ebay (discounting the one Lowepro lookalike lens case fake) but I'm more used to buying goods of this value than selling.

Your views please? Am I 100% secure with Paypal if I drain the funds out before shipping the camera? What else can/should I do to protect myself from risk?

You want to ask why you can't ship it to his UK address and then he ships it aboard himself.

Sounds well dodgy.

The story is that it's for a forthcoming birthday.

I don't claim to know Indonesia but I'm slightly surprised that it's going to be a better deal than picking up the phone, talking to someone local and sending them downtown to buy a new camera. But then I'm making all kinds of presumptions aren't I?

Sounds like an advanced fee scam to me. Call me distrusting, but if he was genuine, he'd send it abroad himself.

What would most likely happen, if it was a scam (and I'm not saying 100% that it is), is that you'll get funds over and above what the price is, you'll then get asked to send the difference to another account, then the original will be cancelled and you'll be left out of pocket.

If/when I sell on ebay I always always sell to UK only.
Buying from hongkong or usa is not a problem as its me tasking the risk buying, but why should you take the risk when its your goods and your money at risk.

Stay clear mate and sell to someone who will actually win it

Don't do it. If you follow ebay and paypal advice you will not go wrong. You ONLY ship to the registered CONFIRMED UK paypal address with signed for, tracked and suitably insured. That way if it goes astray you'll get your money.

I *think* you've only got paypal protection if it's shipped to the confirmed address, if you shipped it direct to Indonesia he could claim it never turned up & you'd be stuffed

Have it back for my errant apostrophe.
