Hi,

I am looking for help/information on getting some new filters. I was using a set of cokin p series inc the p series circular polarizer with my 40d and 17-40L. However i was never fully happy with them for a few reasons inc colour casts.

Now i have recently upgraded to a 5d mk1 the p series filters are no where near wide enough and cause vignetting. Therefore i am looking for a little help and guidance from you kind souls on what to get/consider.

I have been looking at something like this - http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-lee-digital-slr-starter-kit/p1018206 , whilst it doesnt contain the same range of filters i had in my cokin set i guess its a decent place to start? Then of course there is the matter of the circular polarizer.

I think to get one with the lee kit you need an adaptor for the holder which allows the polarizer to spin round seperately to the rest of the filters?

Thats the Kit I went for, and so far am glad I did, dont know about the polarizer though as havent got one for the kit myself,

I have that kit as well..very good starter and they're very accurate and neutral. Have complete trust in them (that is if you can find any Lee Filter products in the UK at the moment :()

Can't comment on the polariser, but would imagine that the holder would rotate on the adaptor ring, by lifting the brass knob, to create the effect that a screw on one would..

Lees IMHO are the best money can buy, the most expensive for a reason, but if you want reasonably good ones, then something like HiTech or Singh Ray would be a good bet..

Thanks for the feedback so far. Why is there such a stock shortage at the moment? Cant they supply the demand for their products?

well I had a look and note this
"These new glass ND filters are optimised for use with digital cameras, as they absorb more infared and UV light than traditional ND filters and provide a more punchy result, with less discolouration in adverse lighting conditions. "
Well apart from the spelling mistake Digital is not effected by Infra red or UV, and I have never use Grads, as I do not find horizons that are straight i.e. not trees or building or mountings cutting into the sky. so to me Its a lot of money I can spend on some good glass

Will get the latest in regard to Lee tomorrow and post, thanks, Sue for pointing it out.

Would the Lee Holder be better than a Cokin Z Pro one?

Well I consider the Lee holder to be the best, mainly because of the ability to change it's configuration. Number of slots, rings, adding two holders together .
Should you require them, plus the range of adapter rings. Mind you, I am somewhat biased having spent loads on their products. If you need a special filter eg: a combination of two or more types in one filter if you can only use a one slot holder on an extreme W/A lens, they will make it for you. I have some combination N/D plus Col. conversion they made for me c.£80-£100.
Plus the range of oversize Pol. filters is something else !
Mind they do cost a bit though. Look at Robert Whites site for prices
(plus VAT) !!!

Yep, you need to get the adaptor ring that attaches to the front of your filter holder with the existing screws. They are £27 +VAT on the Robert White site. Then comes the price of the filter itself....

Yes indeed and along with it the decision about linear or circular. I still cant believe how expensive the price of the polarisor actually is! Its must be the finest piece of glass ever made to cost so much.

So is the common concensus that i should go with a lee kit then as they "are the best of the best"

Also any more news on availability that anyone has heard. I havent had a chance to call Lee yet but i shall be doing shortly so will update here when i do if no one else has heard.

OOPS, I'll check in the next 24 hrs....you need circular for digital photography, linear won't allow autofocus.
Lee don't actually make the circ pol, and they also don't make much on the selling price, it's a very specialised and expensive bit of manufactured glass.

Right, just spoken to Lee and the delivery situation is getting better, there's still a backlog but the pre-christmas rush has tailed off.
Usually Robt White has the best availability, but if you are really stuck and want something in a hurry, pm me.

I have some Lee stuff on order with Morco, I was told mid-January for delivery (ordered early December).

I have the Lee holder, polariser ring and circ pol.
Formatt/Hitech also have a 105mm circ pol at around half the price of the Lee circ pol, and I was assured it would fit on a standard 105mm threaded ring, but I didn't want to take the chance. It may be worth investigating to save £100.

Thanks for the replies guys. I will look into the hitech stuff User Name, thanks.

Gearge you may well have a pm shortly.
