Following on from this thread... http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=253017

My boss at work has seen I have an interest in photography and has some leftover budget. He has said to me I can have £3k to spend on camera equipment for the 'office' (actually for me to use 90% of the time :D)

So, my current personal kit is:

  • Canon 400D with battery grip, 8gb & 4gb cards.
  • 18-55mm Kit lens
  • 50mm Nifty Fifty
  • 430 EX II Speedlite
  • Velbon Tripod & Monopod
My main interests are car photography and the very occasional wedding. But I am looking to get a decent zoom (for motor sport events) and maybe try a bit of macro too. I would like to stay with Canon as I am used to their kit and can use some of my existing kit with the new stuff.

Kit wise my first thoughts were:

  • Canon 7D with 15-85 Kit Lens
  • Canon 10-22 (maybe....)
  • Canon 70-200
  • 16Gb Card
  • Some sort of bag to keep it all in
What are you thoughts ?

Sounds like a good setup to me there, I think the kit lens on the 7D is a 17-85 :)

Saying that I'd be wary about the Canon 10-22 as if you ever go full frame then it wouldn't be compatible.

I think you can get a kit with the 15-85 too, which I have read is a much better lens?

Narr its the successor the 15-85mm on the 7d. or the 18-135mm :)

You're very lucky and have a really nice boss. What do you work as if you don't mind me asking?

Silly reason tbf. Should people who own crop sensors just never buy a UWA in that case then? They may as well have not even made the lens if everyone has that attitude..

If you are going for the 10-22 then perhaps maybe the 24-70L 2.8 would be a better choice instead of the 15-85? It would sit better alongside the 10-22 and the 70-200 imo. Sure you'll be missing a few mm from 22 to 24 but there would be no cross over, and the 24-70L is a stunning lens..

As jamie says about the 10-22mm, try get a second hand one that way if you do go full frame you wont lose much :-)

Its a very nice lens though!

I was hoping for suggestions like this! and L glass always takes my fancy :P

So I would get the 7D body only, then the 10-22, 24-70L and 70-200L. Would that really all come in under £3k ?! I seriously hope so.... *goes to check amazon* lol

After reading the topic, sure I'll help you spend it. How much do you want to give me...£2000? Mind I'll spend mine on Nikon ;)

Amazon prices...

7D body only - £1,163.96
24-70 L - £1,027.00
10-22 - £637.97

Bag - ~ £100
Sandisk Extreme 16Gb Card - £67.50

Total = £2996.43

That excludes the 70-200L :(

Buy your canon stuff from Kerso, and save yourself a few quid! 3k dissapears very quickly when you're buying high-end stuff, try a tamron 17-50 rather than the 24-70, save yourself £800 which will get you most of the way towards the 70-200 (not the mkII though!)

I guess it can be done for £3k if you go for the 7D and the 2 main L lenses. Depends what you're willing to go with.

HDEW Cameras has their own website but also a store in Ebay. They have the 7D body only in their Ebay shop for about £998 inc P&P at the moment I think.

The Canon 24-70 2.8L can be had for around £950-£1000 (Check Digitalrev) and the Canon 70-200mm 2.8L non-IS I think can be had for about £1000.

Yup, just checked Digitalrev. You can buy the 7D body, 24-70 2.8L, 70-200mm 2.8L non-is for £2906.68 inc. P&P and all import tax/duty.

To be honest I think the 10-22 would get more use than the 70-200L, for interior shots etc. Hmmmm decisions decisions !!

Or I could stick with 7D + 17-85, £1400, 70-200, £1000 and 10-22 £600. That puts it right at the limit without a card and bag :(

for interior stuff I would def say the 10-22 would be your bet.

maybe change the camera to lower the price?

Do the cards have to be Sandisks? I use Transcend x133 cards and they seem to work fine on my 7D. I think they are like £20 for 8gb. I prefer to shoot on smaller cards and switch. 16gb worth of pics is a lot to lose if the card gets corrupted.

or.... buy the bag and card yourself.... as you said in first post 90% of the time you will be using it for personal use....

Not jealous or anything :)

Drop the 10-22 for a Sigma 10-20, saving you over £300 :)

Good shout, but would it be as good?

What about the tokina 11-16mm, I have heard that is good? Would save approx £50 ish. Its faster too at f2.8

Whats the next step down from the 7D? I quite like the fact it does video and think I would use it a lot

Dont have too, its just that I have not heard of Transcend. Are they reliable?

If it is work's kit, would you not be able to count the VAT redemption, if you speak to your boss nicley?

2996.43 - 17.5%=£2472.05

Surely we would still have to pay VAT?

next down I would say 50d...could be wrong thought.

Either way long as you have good glass and a good eye your pics will be spot on.

video in a camera I despise! get a video camera much better!! lol

Alternatively, 5DII & 24-105 f4L IS kit, 70-200 f4L.

I'd really be thinking about 5D mkII rather that anything else. 24-105mm or 17-40 + 70-200mm f4 would cover everything really nicely. You can throw in a flash or 85mm f1.8 to finish the setup. 7D is a wild life camera as far as I am concerned.

or the 5d yea.....that way you would save on the 10-22mm lens as you wont need it.

5D MKII is £2034 on Amazon at the moment. Doesn't leave much room for other lens's. Would have to be either 17-40 + accessories or just the 70-200mm.

Can get a lot more with the 7D. What makes it more of a wildlife camera?

Transcend is reliable, all my cards are Transcend x133's.

2x 2gb
2x 8gb
1x 32gb (I got this one free from someone who was going to chuck it out after a failed project)

I am not used to full frame cameras,

What would the 24-105 on a FF compare to on a crop sensor like my 400D ?

24mm is like 38mm on 1.6 crop of the 7D. I use the 24-105mm on my 7D, but I am not a fan of wide angle. If you are shooting interiors then you will need wider. I shoot mainly portraits so anything that gets in head and shoulders is fine for my needs.

"Small" cameras have 1.6x smaller sensor,

i.e. 24-105mm f/4 would behave like 15-65mm f/2.8 on crop. That sounds pretty good.

Canon 7D - £1000
Canon 24-70 f2.8 IS - £750
Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS - £1050
Canon 1.4x Extender - £200

Total Costs £3000, there around the average price of equipment second hand. If you can get any money off these then this can go towards and bag or memory cards or even a grip.

As daugirdas says, the 24-105 gets wide on full frame.

I have a 7D but if someone was going to buy me a camera it would be a 5DII which will probably be my next purchase anyway ;)

What makes the 5DMKII that much better than a 7D ?
