I'm quite new to all of this so not sure whether its' a common problem or not...

While out and about yesterday I noticed just as I was taking my last few shots of the day (Canon 600D) that there seemed to be something like a small piece of black thread on the lens. I gave it a clean but it was still there. I changed to another lens and it was still there. I've subsequently cleaned the mirror, the sensor, and the viewfinder, but still it remains!

So if it's not on any of those elements, where the hell is it? The odd thing is that it's not actually appearing in any photographs, whereas surely that wouldn't be the case if it were on anything other than the viewfinder (it also doesn't appear in live view). Could it be that it's on the other side of the mirror and if so, how the hell do I get to that?

Any advice appreciated.

It's probably in the mirror housing if it's not appeaing in the pictures, unless you can remove the focusing screen (and I doubt you can) you probably can't get at it. You did clean the bottom of the focusing screen I assume, it's above the mirror....

Ps welcome to the fourm.

Thanks - TBH I wasn't aware that such a thing as a focusing screen existing until now so thanks for the tip. Will have a look tonight and let you know how I get on.

If you can see marks through the viewfinder, that don't appear in the image, they'll be on the underside of the focusing screen - above the mirror. Be very careful around there as the screen surface is very delicate and easily marked. Basically, don't touch - use a rocket blower.

Marks visible on the image are (almost) always on the sensor. They usually only show up at high f/numbers on plain areas of tone like sky.

Dust etc on or in the lens, or on the mirror, is very rarely visable, either when viewing or on the final image. Don't worry about it - a few dust marks here and there is just a fact of life.
