The cost to the UK of our legal system  not bothered about Police costs ... Just how much the Country pays for the Courts, lawyers, barristers ... et al! Tried various searches on Google etc but can't find anything :shake: Any suggestions much appreciated

You can use the FOI Act to get such information from Whitehall, but you would need to be quite specific with your questions.

Try asking your MP to point you in the right direction.

Try asking journalists who commonly write editorials for national papers (esp papers that tend to be critical of gov). They may see a story in it since it is bound to be a massive amount for a poor return.

The FOI act may be your best bet, but you might not get the answer that you're looking for.

FOI requests can be declined if it will take an uneconomical amount of time to pull the data together. I think you'll find that each country of the UK keeps separate records for their courts and that each type of court - small claims, family court, magistrate's courts etc etc all compile separate records. It could be a lot for somebody to trawl through to come up with a definitive figure.
If you could narrow your request down to be as specific as possible you might have more joy.

It's not what you're looking for, but you might be interested in some of the information that the ONS compiles on the UK legal system.

You might also be interested to know that HM Treasury will be starting to publish a full, consolidated set of accounts for all government departments / public sector organisations from financial year 2009/10 onwards. These will be audited by the NAO and be publicly available. They will also include 2008/09 comparatives, so if you can wait until then you may find some answers there. (Link below)

Many thanks everyone for the information, Sarah the NAO looks perfect! I'll wait and see what gets published.

I feel a storm coming ....

Thanks again

Came across this site today, which I think might help with what you're looking for.

Maybe no need to wait for the NAO after all :)

Click "Go to Prototype" and then click on "public order & safety" - there are some other interesting links there too.

Many thanks for sharing this  Lots of interesting info. I will work my way through it all and see what comes out

Thanks again SarahLee
